We travelled to Derbyshire to visit chatworth house and booked at the hotel very last minute. We was very impressed with how we were welcomed on our arrival by very helpful and friendly staff. Our room was spacious and we were provided with a free bottle of beer and Prosecco which was a nice surprise. We also didn’t expect to receive a free packed lunch to take with us even though we only stayed for one night.

We didn't actually visit Alstonefield as only had a one night stay, arrived lunchtime on day one walked to Dovedale, via Milldale and back via the countryside route (across fields of sheep and cattle - difficult to follow as lack of public footpath signs). Day two parked at Dovedale National Trust car park and walked to Milldale and back - we were very fortunate with the weather.

The setting is lovely— the village gets busy on weekends (walkers, not cars), but the house is just a few minutes from the main action around the bridge, so it's not a problem. Walking was fantastic; we did two 8-mile walks and a five-mile walk from the house, and there are plenty more to explore. The Sunday roast at the Greyhound Inn (a 15-minute drive), which is also a brewery, was amazing value at 10 pounds each! It is about 30 minutes to Buxton, a great town with interesting restaurants (Lonestar was a great Tex-Mex restaurant), parks, independent shops , and a big Morrisons. It is also 20 minutes to Ashbourne and 30 minutes from Chatsworth. Kinder Scout and Mam Tor, about a further 15 minutes from Buxton, are must-dos if you like walking ( you can see we do!) - as well as cycling on the Tissington trail - hire bikes for 22 pounds for a half day at Pasley Hay and cycle 10 miles to Tissington which is a lovely spot. We didn't use the property bikes as it was more about walking, but my husband said they looked in good nick. The owner responded if you had any questions. We will definitely return!

Alstonfield is a great location from which to start local hikes to Dovedale and other local villages. It is also convenient for location a little further afield like Bakewell, Buxton, and Chatsworth, all about 30 min drive. Alstonfield has a lovely pub call the George, which is friendly and serves good beer. The church is interesting, and the village itself is small being set amongst farmland used for diary and sheep farming.

Such a quiet place, if you have never been be warned the roads are narrow and there is little to no mobile signal or internet. Perfect for a technology de-tox break. The local pub we went was inexpensive on beer but expensive poor food with a really long wait and very small portions.

Rural, quiet, peaceful, picture perfect, indeed so lovely I created several watercolors and ink sketches of the area together with photos to fully record and enjoy the stay. Views in every direction, great bird and wildlife opportunities. Absolute bliss!

The room was spacious, comfortable and warm. All the amenities you could need to hand. Staff were very welcoming and friendly, explaining the history of the hotel and local walks etc. The breakfast was amazing ... soooo much choice (can highly recommend the fresh baked croissants and full English breakfast). Parking on site and wifi available (though getting reception on your phone may be difficult depending on your network provider).I would definately stay there again on my next visit to the area. Exceltionally good value for money.

We couldn't find the place and the sat nav didn't work.Alstonfield as stated on booking. com is not where the Hall is ,it is in Stanhope, we went miles out of our way but when we finally arrived we were greeted by Naomi who asked us if we would like to sit in the garden as it was a beautiful day, she brought out a huge tray with tea and cakes. It was really lovely and the garden is gorgeous. We had spacious accommodation with big private bathroom. The breakfast was very good with lots of choice.

The room we were given by the young man on duty on Sunday 25th May was exactly what we wanted and asked for, a very quiet room overlooking the garden. He was exceedingly helpful and polite. My husband had the breakfast and said it was excellent. Also loved the location of the hotel; right next to the Tissington Trail.

This felt more like a private home with memories of pheasant shoots, handsome stone floors and staircase, and comfortable furnishings than a hotel. In fine weather the gardens would be a delight too.
