FAQs about hotels in Derby

Historic Pioneer with Noble Connections

Bordering the Peak District, pioneering Derby was the site of the first factory during the Industrial Revolution. The city was a silk producer and a former mill forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Derwent Valley Mills, lining the Derwent River between Derby and Matlock.

Also by the river is Darley Park which hosts an annual chamber orchestra concert. The city centre arboretum was England’s first public park, and Markeaton Park in the north-west has a light railway. Nearby is the university campus and 18th-century Kedleston Hall, a Palladian-style mansion involved in filming of ‘The Duchess’.

Another royal connection is Bonnie Prince Charlie who stayed at Exeter House. A replica of his room is in Derby Museum and Art Gallery, and there is a statue of him in Cathedral Square. Opposite is the oldest pub, the Dolphin Inn, but the best nightlife is around Friar Gate.

The nearby Cathedral Quarter is full of eateries and shops, and the Westfield Centre houses big name brands. The Grade II-listed Market Hall offers a range of stalls above underground tunnels which are supposedly haunted by one of Derby’s many ghosts.

Derby County FC play at Pride Park, near the train station and several hotels with parking. Booking.com also offers cheap apartments and guest houses near East Midlands Airport.

Great place staff to improve on friendliness and ask if we need any more help, serve with a smile especially cleaning staff and those at the good point very arrogant when asked for other things like request for grilled tomatoes I don’t eat baked beans and would have been very happy to get grilled tomatoes with my breakfast clean towels after 3 hours in case I had showered more than once

We used to visit Derby many years' ago. The city centre is not the beautiful place it used to be. The shopping area in part comprised tattoo parlours, nail bars and charity shops. The once charming arcades have lost all their charm.

Only had one evening and the following day to explore but enjoyed it. The city centre isn't too big so easy to walk around. Spent a few hours in the Museum of Making which was excellent - learnt a lot about Derby's role in industry. Had a wander around the Derbion shopping centre - bit too busy for me and I was in danger of getting lost as it is pretty big! Also had a wander around some of the smaller shopping streets which have lots of interesting shops, cafes and bars. Didn't seem to be much in the way of vegan/vegetarian eateries so we ate at Pizza Express as we know they have plenty of vegan options.

I was surprised by how nice Derby is and would definitely go again. Lots of nice eateries, pubs and friendly folk. There was a good vibe on Saturday night, people were revelling but I didn't pick up any undercurrent of threat.

It was a nice hotel, reception area really nice. The rooms were a little old fashioned but clean and fit for purpose. Car park included which is always a bonus. Staff on arrival were lovely, really chatty and welcoming. The location to the town centre wasn't too far which is why we booked the Continental. We didn't opt for breakfast so unable to comment, but there were tea/coffee making facilities in the room. I would stay here again if I needed to go to Derby.

Every aspect of our visit was perfect from the friendly staff to the beautifully decorated and comfortable rooms , the location was just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of derby city centre yet central enough so tour not struggling for taxis with heavy shopping bags or from having a meal at one of many restaurants within walking distance, all in all we had a lovely time and will definitely return to the Aston Court hotel.

I’ve stayed here a few times before and always felt welcomed by all the staff whether I’d met them before or not. I had a lovely room on the 10th floor with an amazing view. There was no noise and no disturbances from anyone else at the hotel. The breakfast was excellent. The location is perfect for visiting museums, theatres and music venues in central Derby.
