Absolutely first class service, we were leaving early and the lassie that checked us in, (think she was the owner) made us a packed lunch cos we’d left too early for breakfast. Best packed lunch and well prepared even down to the Prawn Cocktail crisps 😊 nice touch. Would have no hesitation recommending the Craignelder Hotel and I’ll definitely be back.

The host was there to welcome us personally, and the prepared rooms were very clean and comfortable. A nice dinner was available at the Blue Peter, walking distance down the road, and a nicely prepared breakfast was served by the host in the morning,

A town in decline from a retail perspective (we’ve been going to Stranraer for 30+ years so can compare to previous visits) but a friendly welcome from all locals is guaranteed. Great base for visiting the local area with the Mull of Galloway and New Galloway Forest as highlights to visit.

Stranraer is a very pleasant town surrounded by beautiful gardens with a tropical feel. Palm trees grow freely. The beaches are expansive and very suitable for children. The sea is warm from May - September. The weather is better than most parts of Scotland. I lived there for 5 years when I was much younger and my children were small. It is very convenient for getting the ferry to Ireland.

Hotel is excellent but the town is in decline as are most town centres in Scotland. We used the hotel for an overnight stay in order to catch the morning ferry from Cairnryan to Ireland. The ferry is less than a ten minute drive from the hotel.

Stranraer is a town that is evidently depressed, full of abandoned shopfronts and crumbling buildings, at the heart of a lovely stretch of comparatively underfrequented countryside with some excellent features for visitors. You stay in the town because you want to do things outside it. There are hotels and guesthouses, but apparently nothing in the way of a good restaurant - apologies if we missed yours, but please, please publicise better! Such through traffic as the town gets is provided by the ferries at Cairnryan. There are spectacular gardens to visit at Portlogan and Castle Kennedy. If I were younger, I would certainly want to walk the Rhins of Galloway long-distance path.

There seemed to be several nice parks, but the town seemed rather run down. We had a very nice reasonable priced meal at the Craignelder hotel where there is a very reasonable 2 and 3 course menu and children eat for free from Sunday to Friday evening.

Stranraer needs a bit of TLC be honest but there's still plenty to do and it is definitely worth a 3 day stay or more. There's an excellent museum and castle in the town which are worth a visit and locally with a car (or bus) there's loads of walks, a few RSPB sites, the Mull of Galloway, Port Logan fish pond (!), Castle Kennedy gardens and Logan Botanic gardens (to name just a few POIs). Just be careful when going as winter/spring opening hours can be limiting. The North West Castle Hotel offers an excellent place to stay at reasonable cost.

Amazing welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Not the biggest single room I have had, but it was perfectly formed and furnished to a very high standard. One of the most comfortable beds I have had in a B&B and the room was spotlessly clean. Lots of little extras like a glass of Scotch left in my room each day to wind down with at night. It was as near to faultless as you can get.

The nearness to the ferry port. It was a mix of old fashioned hotel styling. You can see the changes being made. The food in the restaurant at dinner was very good. Beautiful prawn cocktail, hubby said he’d settle for 2 as main course. The setting and definately old school, all tables well dressed with all place settings and linens. Service superb.
