Very nice stay at Baratha hotel. Staff friendly and welcoming. Room good size Bed and pillows comfortable. Wifi good. Air con was ok. Kettle in room. Tv had an English channel. Parking onsite for my car. Restaurant and cafe on site. Barista made decent Flat White coffee. Good selection of meals on menu. Breakfast, I had to pay 25k, well worth it.

I messed up during booking and booked a shared bathroom room without air conditioning. But the host was kind enough to upgrade us for free to a room with a private bathroom with hot water and air conditioning. I really liked that gesture.

Bondowoso is a medium-sized but unremarkable town.

Bondowoso is a medium-sized but unremarkable town. Being an administrative centre, it has a university and many government offices. Access road from the northern coast road (turn off at Bezuki) is good with traffic not too bad. From Bondowoso, the mountain pass road to Ijen crater takes over 2 hours to drive, but has only light traffic, and the views once over the highest ridge are fantastic. The upland area between the high ridge and Ijen crater have extensive coffee plantations and beautiful, largely unspoilt scenery. The last 5 km of road before Ijen are narrow and broken, in urgent need of repair, but up to then the road was in a good state.
