Great place to stay transiting to Raja Ampat. Stayed here before and after my liveaboard experience in Raja Ampat. Early check in and room upgrade were fantastic! I would definitely stay here again. Everything a traveler needs. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, excellent included breakfast, super economical dinner buffet, location very near the airport, and friendly staff. There was even an ATM outside their front entrance! Thanks Vega Prime!

Adel picked me up from the ferry terminal. She's great! I only stayed one night..caught a flight out the next morning. Adel arranged a driver for me. My room was basic but very clean as was the communal kitchen where you could purchase cold drinks and packs of noodles. Tea and coffee always available for free. Very quiet area and close to the airport.

Sorong is the island you fly in and out of!

Sorong is the island you fly in and out of! Caught ferry to Waisai to stay on Waigeo island for 4 nights. Arrived at Sorong airport to be greeted by a plethora of people shouting taxi at us, and got one to the port to buy ferry ticket. You will get approached by many locals to be a porter, can be a bit intimidating. Clearly chewing betel leaves and red stains all over place including the ticket office, which was bit of a free for all. First time in Asia felt not completely safe, could be just the Papuans way but got left alone eventually. Sorong itself was graffiti everywhere , rubbish everywhere and a bit run down.

We were only in Sorong the night before boarding a liveaboard and the night after we returned. I would not recommend any additional time there. The call to prayer is extremely loud and constant. The streets are treacherous.

Stay in Sorong is of course the best way to reach Raja Ampat without being in a hurry, but it is also possible to organize day trips for birdwatching or just for exploring the surrounding area; i.e.. we visited Batu Lobang Pantai, a nice place to spend time.

Sorong is the entry point to exploring Raja Ampat.

Sorong is the entry point to exploring Raja Ampat. Unfortunately its town does not match the beauty or cleanliness of what the region has to offer. It is a poor town with limited facilities and attractions. Not a place to stay for a long time.

Not a great place to visit.

Not a great place to visit. City is very impoverished and really is only as a point for embarking on cruises or boats to the islands of Raja Ampat. The islands and reefs of Raja Ampat are spectacular.

Sorong served as a stopover before our liveaboard dive trip...

Sorong served as a stopover before our liveaboard dive trip to Raja Ampat. The journey to Sorong was quite lengthy - two flights from Manila, so I chose to rest before diving. We attempted to explore the island by visiting the Pagoda and the local market for a cultural experience, but there wasn't much to see beyond the islands themselves. Overall, Sorong seems more like a transit point than a destination in its own right.
