Everything was so good, room was delightful, clean and comfortable. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, they did me a favor and I couldn't apriciate more. Also, the breakfast was too good, everything fresh and tasty. I would recommend this little hotel to everyone visiting Ferrara. Close to the main attractions in the city old town and is surrounded by many restaurants so that you can enjoy Italian cuisine. For sure I will be staying here in the future.

Location was amazing, just a few minutes walk to Este Castle and town center. We stayed in the Anex room (family of 4) and the room was very spacious, had a kitchen (no oven) but we'll equipped with new pots and pans, cutlery etc. bathroom was huge and great shower. Breakfast was also superb with homemade cakes and biscuits. We really loved our stay at Hotel de Prati and would highly recommend it.

I cannot be more positive about The Dome. The room was huge and centrally located in a pedestrian zone. My huge window faced the Duomo and the nearby Estense Castle. There is no breakfast but there are plenty of food shops just below the Hotel. It even has a McDonalds in the same building complex. It is a 20 minute walk to the rail station, but there are many bus stops in the Hotel area. The buses stop just outside the rail station. The stops are a 5 minute walk to the Hotel. I have never experienced a place with such great lighting. Since it is a pedestrian zone below as this is Ferrara's main Piazza there is foot traffic till mid-night. If you shut the window and use the earplugs which the Hotel automatically supplies (thank you to Sonia, the chambermaid) you do not hear the voices below. The Hotel also supplied a sewing kit automatically. It was convenient for me as I had loose buttons on my long pants and shorts and took care of them with the kit. The area has restaurants galore just below the rooms. The Dome also has a Sky-bar serving good food and drink at reasonable prices. The Dome restaurant is on the same level as my room.

FAQs about hotels in Ferrara

A Renaissance Rival to Florence

Ferrara was a haven for the arts during the Renaissance and much of this is still evident today. The powerful Este family held court in the multi-turreted Estense Castle, protected by a moat and drawbridge, and they were illustrious patrons of artists and authors.

Bellini, Piero della Francesca and Titian all perfected their strokes here, and the university houses parts of Ludovico Ariosto’s original manuscript of his epic poem – Orlando Furioso – containing allegorical references to his sponsors. The family is also depicted in Palazzo Schifanoia’s detailed fresoces, and the Palazzo dei Diamanti gallery displays works commissioned from the School of Ferrara.

Some Este tombs are in Corpus Domini Monastery and another is in the ornate cathedral whose three-gabled façade overlooks the crenellated town hall. Both line Piazza di Trento e Trieste, the main square where locals come to socialise. Another popular square is green Piazza Ariostea.

The Este strengthened their position through marriage alliances with the influential Borgia, Medici and Gonzaga families, but they didn’t have it all their own way. Ferrara’s well-preserved city walls were built for defence, and ardent opponent of the Renaissance, Savonarola, was born in this UNESCO World Heritage city.

Surrounding cobbled streets house many luxury Ferrara hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near the train station, available on Booking.com.

If you like sightseeing there are plenty of places to visit - Castle, Museums, Fine Houses, Gardens and most of it is within walking distance but there is a tourist 'train' if you don't like to walk. There are many restaurants to choose from and all our food was excellent or very good.

Ferrara is a nice, contained little town with a very relaxed atmosphere. There were virtually no foreign tourists, at least not in groups. Most of the residents seem to bicycle everywhere, so there's not much traffic. There's plenty to see, and it can easily be done on foot.

Ferrara is somewhat more monumental than many other cities in Emilia-Romagna and there is a lot to see, especially for people interested in Renaissance but I also found it less cosy and somewhat more messy than most of the region.

Ferrara is a lovely city.

Ferrara is a lovely city. Well preserved medieval and Renaissance buildings. Less crowded and more manageable than Firenze. Would recommend to anyone interested in history, especially of the Este family. Books set in Ferrara include the Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell and the Garden of the Finzi Continis by Bassani. While there don’t forget to try the local pasta- capellacci.

The city is a gem.

The city is a gem. I wish I could have stayed longer but I needed to get home to take care of my cats so I only was there two nights. My purpose was to go the Chagall art exhibit at the Diamond Palace gallery. This may be a place a visit frequently as they have several special exhibitions each year. BONUS was the huge castle in the center of town, less than a block from my hotel. I wandered through history for a couple of hours. It was fantastic. Did someone say food? There is just about anything you might want within walking distance. From traditional Italian favorites to Sushi with some odd Italian flair. The food was very affordable as well. Getting there was no problem. The train station is connected by high speed trains to all the major cities in Italy. I live outside of Lucca and traveled through Florence and Bologna without issue.
