The location of the hotel was excellent - within walking distance of everything, including the JR station, the canal and major attractions. Otaru is a compact city that's easy to explore on foot, and the hotel's location made it especially convenient to get around, even during snowy or rainy weather. We originally planned to join the Ono Ranger Tour but decided to start exploring on our own a bit earlier in the morning, which ended up fitting our schedule much better. The hotel itself was newly renovated and very clean. While it doesn't have a large public bath, the breakfast was outstanding and became a highlight of out stay. Another special touch was the nostalgic atmosphere created by gas lights and an antique orgel playing music on the top floor during certain hours - it really made the experience memorable. Overall, it was a perfect stay filled with beautiful memories.

If you're into shopping and eating, there are a lot of stores and restaurants. Other than that there wasn't a whole lot to see for us. The canal and warehouse district seems a bit overrated and too hyped up for us. We were there one afternoon and evening and that was enough for us. In all fairness, we didn't do a lot of research beforehand, in terms of things to do and places to visit, since we had only limited time. Unfortunately, we missed the Otaru Denuki-koji area, which has a lot of cute, small restaurants.

Otaru is a great spot for skiers with several resorts close...

Otaru is a great spot for skiers with several resorts close by. An interesting and picturesque city with sea and mountains and good shopping. Ate in some little one-table restaurants in food alleys, a most interesting experience and great food. Also went to Pepe's restaurant, worth booking!

Otaru is an amazing and charming town that is a hidden gem on Hokkaido. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, especially along the coast, and best of all you're within an hour drive to several great mountains.

A Soulful Blend of History and Innovation Otaru is an exceptional city, an old harbor town with stunning sea views and beautifully preserved architecture. Walking through its streets, I felt transported into the past, surrounded by buildings that reflect how ancient Japanese communities lived, worked, and innovated. We did glass blowing at a great place called Il Ponte - made...

We did glass blowing at a great place called Il Ponte - made a glass each to take home! Also spent an afternoon Kayaking nearby at Shioya beach with Max at Sunnyside Up -well worth doing with amazing scenery and even a swim at a beach! Also found a great little place for dinner that locals go to called Summi's Grill in a little back alley near the Sun arcade. Met a couple of locals who go there every day!

It's a charming city, so walking around the Sakaimachi...

It's a charming city, so walking around the Sakaimachi neighbourhood was fun and relaxing. Watch out for day trippers from Sapporo though, which could crowd up the shops and restaurants. Dinner was a challenge - many restaurants refused to take our reservation and we had to be turned away from them.

It's a lovely old hotel in a great location. We walked with our suitcases from the train station which was downhill, a little tricky in the snow, but manageable, about 15-20 minute walk. We chose to book a taxi back to the station because it was uphill - about $8 AUD, so worth it! The room was large, but everything is a bit tired. Great view out over the canal, and also great view at breakfast. Will loved Otaru, but very touristy!

This place is AMAZING. I cannot believe this listing can even operate for the price they charge! You get literal five star hotel level amenities at a fraction of the cost! This includes a fridge, private toilet, shower, double bed and television. The location is also right next to Sakaimachi Street and the Music Box Museum. What's there not to like? I will 100% be coming back if I ever return to Otaru in future! 🪐

This was our second stay at this hotel and it did not fail to dissapoint. Great hotel, walking distance from the train station and Otaru's attractions. Breakfast was excellent with a variety of western and Japanese choices. The staff were friendly - all in all a very good hotel.

The best part of the hotel is the view of the canal. If looking for a hotel in Otaru, you should definitely check out Hotel Sonia. Good access to the shopping street and lots of good restaurants close by. The hotel was a little rustic in parts but it added to the charm.
