Fairlie is a lovely village with helpful and friendly locals. The Fairlie Bakery makes yummy pies and apple turnovers. The local 4 Square supermarket has all your needs, and the staff were so very nice. We had many beers at the Top Pub, and the locals didn't seem to mind our large extended family commandeering the back table and the pool table; lovely Ness the publican, even gave the younger family members some hints on holding the pool que. A walk to the river and ice-skating rink will reveal some revegetation underway. Once the rain cleared the view of the snow-capped mountains was spectacular!

Beautiful clean friendly town.

Beautiful clean friendly town. The museum is amazing and a must see. $20 entry fee, I think. The Cafe attached looked incredible, but we had already eaten. We spent 2 hours at the museum and could have spent longer. Everyone just seemed happy.

Quiet town with all the amenities.

Quiet town with all the amenities. There is a nice cafe/restaurant called Eat which is worth a visit with very tasty and good value meals. Over the road, Mount Hutt takeaways offers tasty and good value fare as well. It serves Chinese takeaways and fish and chips. Of course there's also the Fairlie Bakehouse with its home made pies which are worth sampling.

The bakehouse pies are worth queueing for.

The bakehouse pies are worth queueing for. There are a couple of nice shops - not much else there although you could visit the nearby hamlets which looked to have some interesting features. We tried to walk along the river but the path was quite overgrown.

Fairlie hasnt got buried by tourists yet- it is real and the locals are busy farm folk. There are a couple of good eating places (our favourite is the Library restaurant-changed hands but food still excellent). The supermarket is well stocked. We have done some of the walks with our kids before - the new bike tracks sound interesting-must try them out next time. The information place is a gem with a couple of bubbly ladies with helpful ideas.

During peak season, Tekapo hotels are expensive and scarce. Fairlie Holiday Park is a solid choice—located en route from Christchurch and just a short drive to Tekapo. It's a convenient base for visiting the lake the following morning. Bonus: the night sky in Fairlie is incredible.

Some have recently complained that the hotel is dirty. It isn't. They must be OCD. It's just an honest old pub with patina. I liked it.
