Small town on the edge of the lake surrounded by hills and mountains. Friendly place easy to navigate by foot, bike &/or car. Plenty of coices for food and one maginficent cafe called Kai Whaka Pai over;lookinmg the lake, great coffee, awesome ranmge of beers and good food

Lots of great dining options in town.

Lots of great dining options in town. Very cute local stores. The Wanaka tree was a little underwhelming, but the lake is stunning. Very much enjoyed the Lavender Farm. Amazing service and food at The Stoaker Room, definitely add it to your list. Check out Albert Town. Though very difficult to secure an Uber ride in town.

Nice lake and of course the Wanaka Tree - but heaps of tourists to contend with especially for an early morning shot. Had seafood chowder for lunch at Lake Bar. Very ordinary for the price. Great autumn colours in the trees lining the streets.

Fabulous place to stay.

Fabulous place to stay. Much quieter than Queenstown still retaining a kiwi/international friendly community. You can just chill out in the town at all the amazing cafes and restaurants. Lots of walks around the lake, central to the Otago Wineries and all the outdoor activities - no hustle and bustle but a great vibe.

Bustling vacation spot - very busy as it was the A and P show weekend. Everything in town is within walking distance. Had fun watching the sheep dog trials and hunter jumping and farrier/horseshoe competition. Expect to pay a little more for groceries here. A swim in the lake was a bit cold, and the lake level was way down so with the weed growth along the lakefront it was hard to get into deep enough water! I biked up the Cardrona road - narrow shoulder, but cars were pretty courteous. Road surface was mostly good. Had a good piece of gurnard from The Catch Wanaka - their chips are a bit tasteless - needed more salt, and not sure what oil they use but it tastes different to what I am used to.

Wanaka is very beautiful, but it is fairly weather dependant. We were unlucky that there was poor weather in New Zealand this summer, and Wanaka was no exception. We had to curtail a lakeside walk because of rain. We didn't do some of the 'tourist' things like Puzzling World, which is great fun, especially for kids, as we've been there on a previous trip. There are lots of restaurants and bars, but it was extremely busy when we were there because it was 'Challenge Wanaka' weekend. Worth avoiding if you aren't taking part.

The tiny cabin was beautiful - felt like a hotel stay for a holiday park price. Bed was luxurious and comfortable and the amenities did the job. A beautiful view from the cabin and some helpful stuff available at the desk like an iron and a hairdryer.

Self contained cottage was cute, compact, cosy and clean. Steve gave us a friendly welcome ably assisted by his canine companion, Beau. The friendly vibe was duplicated at the local hotel where we were greeted as if we were regulars.

You can’t put a price on the views offered at Hāwea hotel. It has motel vibes and was a little dated but everything was clean and comfortable, top notch staff and the on site restaurant was lovely.
