We loved everything about this place, especially the fact that exclusive use of a little car to run around in while you stay at Evening Cove was included in the tariff. We were welcomed at the ferry terminal by Lionel on our arrival, and later met Cassandra, they are the most delightful hosts you could wish for. The accommodation was perfect, every box was ticked for us.

Unique experience all around & all together-being one with nature-the design of the glass cabin. Perfect temperature, layout, design, bedding. WE LOVED IT! No Kiwi SEEN by the cabin area but a walk down the main road resulted in a sighting! The STARS above you & it’s no dream.

Owners were super lovely and helped return an item I left on the island asap! They picked us up from the ferry and had a courtesy car we could hire during our stay which was invaluable. Cabins are fairly close to each other but private enough we could enjoy our stay. Had washer and dryer available if needed.

Half-moon bay is a great base to explore Stewart Island.

Half-moon bay is a great base to explore Stewart Island. It has a small supermarket, 2 coffee shops and several tour operators. The highlight of our trip was doing the Kiwi spotlighting tour with beaks and feathers - got see at least 5 kiwis in the wild. We also did a tour to Ulva island and then later went back by water taxi to do the other walks there and bird spotting. We also hired bikes to check out the other end of Stewart Island. A lovely, quiet, remote place - great for walking and birdwatching.

You don't need to spend money on tours if you don't have it (I never do), as there are plenty of beautiful walks to discover for yourself. Ulva Island is a must, though!!! The bird life is amazing, and even though at home we have plenty of kereru, piwakawaka, bellbirds, the song and sight of these guys over there is next level. Kereru, walking or sitting on the ground, is not seen in cities. Do take sandfly spray as these wee guys are also very friendly 😉

The township of Oban is the place to find out most info, access e-bikes and get details of walks, kiwis, trips to places such as Ulva Island. It’s the central township for the island. Glad it has a four square, friendly people at the Doc site. Butterfield Bay is gorgeous.

Great place. I would have liked more time to do more walks.

Great place. I would have liked more time to do more walks. We stayed 2 nights - just enough to do a kiwi experience and visit Ulva Island. We were unlucky with no Kiwi sightings. But the longer walks would have green goid to do if we had more time.

We loved Stewart Island and our travel by ferry to Half Moon Bay. We ate several meals at South Sea Restaurant. Delicious! Several walks, beaches and sights were within easy walking distance. We took a taxi from our accommodations to Golden Bay for our Beaks and Feathers Tour to Ulva Island which we would highly recommend. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the island, the birds and trees.

Very peaceful and quaint area that is brilliant for walking to see stunning scenery and enjoy the wildlife. Lots of well made pathways and with the island roads being quiet it was easy to explore the numerous beautiful sandy bays. I will definitely come back to enjoy more of this fabulous area.

The hotel is very convenient to the ferry terminal, beach, harbour and service companies in the village. Room was small but had a wash basin. The showers (down a long corridor) were spacious and well maintained. The in-house restaurant served excellent food at non-exploitive prices.

This small boutique hotel is a gem. Sat just above the bay great views from our room and a very short walk to the harbour and facilities. The owners Deanne and Chris really looked after us and the food was exceptional. A welcoming Alfie the dog was just an extra bonus!
