It is located in the most beautiful raw beauty of the Karoo landscape. Breathtaking beauty after the rain; and pure clean earth and sky with the play of light and clouds and fragrance in the air. The accommodation was beautiful and comfortable down to every last detail and the staff was welcoming and warm and efficient.

We actually did not stay long.

We actually did not stay long. We had a meal across the road from where we stayed, but did not walk around or did any activities as we perceived the local people to be very poor and we chose to stay indoors.

Once off the N12 the roads in Britstown - mainly gravel - were rather bumpy, probably the norm in most small towns acroos South Africa at the moment. I was very pleasantly surprised by the standards and quality provided by the Old Mill Coffee Shop, where I enjoyed a wholesome breakfast, and the Transkaroo Country Lodge, at which I enjoyed a delicious dinner and a good breakfast.

Britstown is a small town.

Britstown is a small town. There is a nice hotel (Transkaroo hotel) and a nice coffee shop (The Mill) where you can stop. The hotel has a nice vibe in the dining area. The dinners are delicious. I think it's good for a stop over if you have a long journey arriving late in the afternoon or early evening. The Transkaroo hotel will provide a deserved rest.

The History from the Boer War.

The History from the Boer War. The war graves in the cemetery with the use of the local hospital. The fact that a Scotsman is recorded as being the father of South African poetry and stayed in Britstown. I would like to see the old Gaol receive Heritage status so that the buildings can be preserved.

Not really applicable for we only stayed over en route to Cape Town and did not tour around. No after-hours supermarkets or shops were available though. The only restaurant was booked for a private function and was unavailable.

It is always interesting to visit small town and to stay over even if it is just one night. There are interesting restaurants to visit and as always in small town historic contexts that makes it nice to see.
