French Island General Store and accommodations operate on the original site of the Tankerton Post Office, which opened 3 September 1890. Accommodation #1 FIGS cottage is a renovated original worker's cottage, accommodation #2 FIGS Converted Stables is a converted original horse stable; and accommodation #3 is a fully renovated caravan.
The store, cafe and accommodation have been run by the Le Serve family and their helpful staff since 2016. Tanya's father Neil has been the French Island postmaster for 30+ and only recently retired.
French Island is situated in the middle of Western Port, internationally regarded for its unique biodiversity and is a protected area within the Western Port Ramsar site, an UNESCO recognised wetland.
