The village of Brompton-by-Sawdon is about 8 miles west of Scarborough and close to the North Yorkshire Moors. The village has a population of approximatley 600 people. Brompton is the birthplace of aviation owing to the long-term residence of pioneering aeronautical engineer Sir George Cayley. The poet William Wordsworth married Mary Hutchinson at All Saints Church in the village on the 4th October 1802.
