La Cantera is a self-contained accommodation situated in the village of Heolgerrig, in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Once a double-garage, it has been converted to offer our guests beautiful views, easy access to attractions in the surrounding area, privacy, relaxation, tranquillity, and a high-end interior with the added luxury of a fire pit, a hot tub and a log burner. La Cantera caters for everyone – bikers using Bike Park Wales, couples who would like a romantic get-away, families who would like to explore more of South Wales, walkers who would like to explore the Brecon Beacons; even groups of friends who are simply looking for a fun time away. We are exceptionally proud of La Cantera and all it can offer you during your stay; we pride ourselves on the panoramic views of Merthyr Tydfil, including Cyfarthfa Park and Castle, and Pen y Fan, together with our brand-new facilities which include a fully-integrated, fully-equipped, modern kitchen, a beautiful bathroom, a luxurious double sofa bed, and a king size bed which can be separated into two single beds.

Welcome to La Cantera! I am Esther Rebecca Steele and in March 2022 my husband Ryan and I began converting our garage into this beautiful, self-contained accommodation, which finally opened its doors in December 2022. In that short space of time we have achieved Superhost status on Airbnb; we currently have an overall rating of 4.95/5 after 20 reviews. Why is La Cantera called La Cantera? La Cantera is built on a quarry and La Cantera is Spanish for 'the quarry'. The Spanish connection comes from our love for all things Spanish and Ryan's amazing upbringing in Mojacar which lies in the Province of Almeria in southern Spain. We like to think that La Cantera has a Spanish influence whilst also spotlighting the beauty of South Wales, particularly Merthyr Tydfil. Ryan and I have two beautiful children - our daughter Francesca who is 11, and our son Jesse who is 6. They both attend Welsh-medium school so are very competent in Welsh. Jesse is a fantastic tennis player and Francesca is a wonderful singer. Ryan is a fluent Spanish speaker whose hobbies include going to the gym, playing tennis, but most of all playing Fortnite with Jesse and the other males in the family! I am able to speak German to a good standard; I have family from Germany and I lived in Austria for a short time. My hobbies include playing squash to a very good level and watching Rafael Nadal play tennis on the television - yet another reason for our love of Spain! Ultimately, we are exceptionally grateful for your booking at La Cantera and we are always ready to make each and every stay unforgettable. Our house is a stone's throw away from the garage therefore we are more often than not on site if assistance/help is ever required.

The village of Heolgerrig has a lovely village pub, The Red Lion, which is also home to the Gwlad Duw Pizza Company which serves stone baked pizza (selected nights only). Heolgerrig also has a post office which provides the community with a friendly service. Additionally, there is a convenience store and a hair and beauty salon, Cut and Comb Hair Salon, together with a retail park at the entrance to the village which houses Boots, Costa, H&M, M&S, Matalan, Next, and many more. A minute walk from La Cantera is a children's playground with a climbing frame, a slide and swings. Access to Bike Park Wales is a stone's throw away from the accommodation. Heolgerrig has a bus service running to and from Merthyr Tydfil town centre. The closest stop from La Cantera is a minute walk away. Merthyr Tydfil bus station also has direct links to Brecon, Cardiff and surrounding areas. The village amenities are all within walking distance, however many taxi firms service Heolgerrig. Merthyr Tydfil has many, many attractions. It is home to Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery, the Brecon Mountain Railway, Bike Park Wales, Joseph Parry's Cottage, Cefn Coed Viaduct, Pen y Fan, the Brecon Beacons and many other walks. It is also very close to the Aberfan Disaster Memorial and the Rock UK Summit Centre. Many of our guests are walkers, whose point of interest is the Brecon Beacons, particularly the Four Waterfalls Walk. In addition, Merthyr Tydfil has many lovely restaurants, however Ryan and I would recommend Casa Bianca (Italian cuisine), The Aberglais (traditional pub food), Red Spice (Indian cuisine), and The New Crown (Portuguese cuisine).
