Company info

We are Lisa and Greg, a couple living in a small South Yorkshire village. We each have two grown up sons and share two delightful cockapoos, Chester and Beau, who are regular visitors to Skeldale House. Lisa, an Early Years Teacher and partner Greg, an Entrepreneurial Business Owner, bought Skeldale House on August 1st (Yorkshire Day) 2025. They are both outdoor enthusiasts, triathletes and love the Yorkshire Dales. This brand new venture is an exciting opportunity and we are committed to improving and developing the house. Skeldale House is a Grade II listed building and was the veterinary surgery from the original series of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. It is now a luxury serviced accommodation property and features 6 studios and 1 apartment. A unique feature of the property is ‘The Surgery’, which displays memorabilia from the original show, books by James Herriot himself and lots of veterinary paraphernalia. Our goal is to improve the experience of our guests and one of the ideas is to open ‘The Surgery’ as a day room and place of relaxation; featuring cosy armchairs, ambient lighting and interesting books. We also have future plans for retreats and sporting camps. Greg has recently become a qualified Positive Psychology Coach and plans to offer a weekend of coaching, taking advantage of the serene surroundings and natural beauty location. Greg is also an IronMan and long serving triathlon coach. Skeldale House is a perfect area in which to cycle, run and hike. We can accommodate cyclists and store bikes safely. We both love to open water swim at nearby Semerwater; a private lake, just 5 miles from Skeldale House. Here the public can book open water swimming and water sports. Lisa has a keen eye for detail and loves interior design. She has plans to improve the luxurious decor, adding homely touches, whilst adhering to the mid-century style. Together we are relishing acquainting ourselves with the local businesses in the village of Askrigg and lovely Dal

Property info

Skeldale House is an Iconic Building set in the very heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. You may have fond memories of Skeldale House from its starring role as the veterinary surgery in the original series of All Creatures Great and Small. And now you can relive those heart-warming scenes of James Herriot and Siegfried Farnon waltzing in, through the fabulous entrance doors, to be greeted by Mrs Hall and a hearty Yorkshire dinner, after another tension filled day of saving livestock, appeasing the locals and trying to stay on the road in that old Austin! There’s a nod to the 1950’s era with the mid-century styling and ornate detailing, with compact but well equipped kitchens, 58’’ 4K Ultra HD TV’s and sumptuously elegant, comfortable beds and roll top baths: For suite name, see second image on room images for door plaque. The Tricky Woo Suite: large bedroom with freestanding bath, shower room, kitchen, and large lounge with sofa bed for two adults. The Herriot and Farnon Suites: King bed plus small sofa bed in lounge / bedroom is best suited to 1 or 2 small children. bathroom, compact kitchen. All others: King bed studio, kitchenette, bathroom Additionally, pets are welcome; however, extra charges will apply.

Neighborhood info

Askrigg with its old market cross and the impressive Parish Church of St Oswald, which can be found at the end of a long main street of lovely eighteenth and nineteenth century houses, was once celebrated for its clock makers. There are several fine examples of their work on display in our Dales Countryside Museum in nearby Hawes. In later years the village corn and then textile mill was powered by the Mill Gill stream, which flows through a narrow wooded valley to pretty Mill Gill Falls – a favourite walk from the village. James Herriot's home: Our imposing house in Askrigg enjoyed television fame in the 1970s and 1980s as Skeldale House – home of the fictional Dales vet James Herriot, whilst the King's Arms became the setting for the Drover's Inn. There are many footpaths around the village with which you could create a short walk - the climb up Mill Gill is a local favourite. Those wanting more of a challenge could walk further along the valley to Hawes or eastwards to Carperby, Castle Bolton and Redmire. Askrigg is well-served with three pubs, a brewery, a tea room, deli and craft shops. It makes a great base for visitors
