Hjartarstaðir, formerly known as Hagi 2, is our family’s cherished countryside retreat, surrounded by mature trees and the peaceful landscape of South Iceland. We have cared for and developed the property gradually over many years, creating a warm, personal place where guests can slow down and feel at home.
The cottage accommodates up to four guests in two bedrooms, each with a double bed. Inside, guests will find a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living and dining area, free Wi-Fi and a bathroom with an indoor shower.
Outside, guests have exclusive use of spacious private grounds, a furnished terrace, barbecue, sheltered seating and dining area, and a private hot tub. When weather conditions allow, there is also a warm outdoor shower. Mornings often begin with birdsong and coffee on the terrace, while evenings are perfect for relaxing in the hot tub or enjoying the changing light across the countryside.
The cottage is thoughtfully equipped for a relaxing stay while retaining the character and personal atmosphere of a much-loved Icelandic country home.
We are an Icelandic family of five who have enjoyed Hjartarstaðir as our countryside retreat for many years. We love nature, gardening, outdoor living and creating warm, welcoming spaces where people can slow down and spend meaningful time together.
The name Hjartarstaðir has a special meaning for our family. It was chosen in memory of Thuridur´s father, Hjörtur, and also reflects what the property has become to us—a place close to the heart and a peaceful refuge from everyday life. We hope our guests experience some of that same sense of calm during their stay.
In Hjartarstaðir guests can enjoy the privacy, birdsong and views towards the nearby lake and surrounding mountains.
During summer, the long evenings and beautiful sunsets can be enjoyed from the terrace. In winter, the dark countryside skies offer good conditions for watching the Northern Lights directly from the property, although sightings depend on weather and solar activity and cannot be guaranteed.
Hella, the nearest town, is approximately 15–20 minutes away and offers grocery stores, fuel stations, restaurants and a geothermal swimming pool. Nearby attractions include the historic Caves of Hella and the LAVA Centre in Hvolsvöllur. Selfoss, with a wider selection of shops and restaurants, is around 25–30 minutes away.
Hjartarstaðir is a convenient base for exploring the Golden Circle, Hekla volcano, Seljalandsfoss and the South Coast. Þórsmörk, Landmannalaugar and other Highland destinations can also be visited during the summer when road and weather conditions allow.
A rental car is essential, and we are always happy to share local tips and recommendations.
