Volastra is a small hilltop village in the Cinque Terre, within the municipality of Riomaggiore. Unlike the more famous villages directly overlooking the sea, Volastra maintains a peaceful and authentic atmosphere, surrounded by terraced vineyards and scenic trails. The village has very ancient origins, probably dating back to Roman or early medieval times. For centuries, the inhabitants mainly lived off agriculture, cultivating vines on the characteristic terraces supported by dry stone walls, a technique that has shaped the landscape of the Cinque Terre and is today recognized as part of the cultural heritage. The main historical building is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health, a Romanesque church built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The sanctuary houses a revered image of the Madonna and is one of the stops on the Marian sanctuaries of the Cinque Terre.
