Company info

Our company supports ryokan and hotels across Japan through web and technology services for the tourism industry. Through a special opportunity, we took over a former traditional ryokan building and reopened it as BUNA KUSATSU, a small and peaceful guesthouse in Kusatsu Onsen. The name “BUNA” comes from the Japanese beech tree, a native tree known for its long lifespan of 200–300 years and its deep roots across Japan’s mountains. We chose this name with the hope that BUNA KUSATSU will continue to grow and be loved for many years to come. Located in a quiet villa area surrounded by nature, our guesthouse is designed for guests who value calmness, simplicity, and an authentic hot spring experience. We hope your stay in Kusatsu will be both relaxing and memorable.

A 3–4 minute walk leads to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the town, and it is about a 15–20 minute walk downhill to the famous Yubatake area and Sainokawara Park. All six rooms are completely private 7-tatami Japanese-style rooms. Simple and calming, they are designed for rest and slow living. All rooms are located on the second floor (no elevator). Toilets and sinks are shared. Optional yukata rental is available during your stay. PRIVATE NATURAL HOT SPRING We offer two indoor baths with natural hot spring water from the Yukawa-no-Yu source. The baths are shared but used privately and are not separated by gender. When vacant, you may lock the door and enjoy the bath in complete privacy, including couples bathing together. No reservation is required. Guests with tattoos are welcome. SELF CHECK-IN The entrance and guest rooms are accessed by a personal PIN code provided before arrival. Check-in is completed on a tablet at the front desk by following simple on-screen instructions. There is no full-time staff on site, but online and phone support are available if needed. KITCHEN & LONGER STAYS A shared kitchen with basic cooking equipment is available. We also provide a free washing machine and dryer (household type) for guest use, along with complimentary detergent. This makes longer stays comfortable and convenient. Many guests choose to stay multiple nights, enjoying Kusatsu’s public baths, forest walks, and surrounding mountain scenery at a relaxed pace. A PEACEFUL ENVIRONMENT This is not a party-style guesthouse. Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Smoking and strong fragrances are not permitted. We look forward to welcoming you to Kusatsu.

Neighborhood info

BUNA KUSATSU is located in a quiet residential villa area on a hilltop in Kusatsu Onsen. While slightly removed from the busy center, the peaceful setting allows for a calm and relaxing stay. Kusatsu is a compact town that can be explored on foot. The famous Yubatake area is approximately a 15-minute walk away. The route is downhill toward town and uphill on the way back. Within walking distance, you will find: – Izakaya Yuzuki (about 3 minutes) – Lawson convenience store (about 10 minutes) – Kogomi Bakery (about 10 minutes) – Supermarket (about 15 minutes) Taxis and a local community bus (100 yen per ride) are also available for those who prefer not to walk. Please note that operating hours are limited, and large luggage is not permitted on the bus. For guests arriving by car, getting around is even more convenient. Paid parking is available near the Yubatake area, allowing flexible access depending on weather or personal preference. The supermarket is about a 3-minute drive away. Having a car also makes it easy to explore the surrounding region. Scenic drives such as the Shiga–Kusatsu Kogen Route, as well as day trips to Karuizawa, Manza Onsen, and Shima Onsen, are popular among guests staying multiple nights. The area is well suited for those who wish to enjoy hot springs and nature at a relaxed pace.
