Kia Ora Nau mai haere mai Welcome to Koowai, the song of nature Nestled in the rural town of Owhango, in the heart of Ruapehu, Koowai Is your home away from home. Your hosts Michelle & Jack look forward to meeting you. With its extensive European inspired garden there is no better place to relax, unwind and explore. Your accommodation includes a recently renovated private room within our house with ensuite bathroom. The space is part of the main house but with sole use of the outdoor patio area there is plenty space to stretch out and relax. The outdoor space includes a dining table and BBQ area, with chiminea and cape cod chairs set up for some night time star gazing. With very little light pollution, Owhango has some of the best star gazing available, particularly around each new moon. Inside a comfy queen bed and reading nook awaits with a view of the garden from the bedroom window. Tea, plunger coffee and plant milk will be provided. Please note that due to our rural location cell phone service is only available for Spark & Skinny but you can also use wifi calling The space
We're excited to share our little slice of paradise with you. After moving from Wellington to the small village of Owhango, we've fallen in love with being surrounded by nature and the slower pace of life. We're passionate about hiking and travel, and we're happy to share local tips to help you make the most of your stay
We are a 1 minute walk away from the Ohinetonga reserve and nature walks leading down to the Whakapapa River. Try your luck spotting Weiweia (Dabchicks) at the reserve lagoon and Whio (Blue duck)at the River. There are two local swimming holes and plenty of picnic spots   If you are a keen mountain biker the 42 traverse mountain bike trail will give you a challenge along with plenty of scenic bush (allow 5 hours) Quad bikers and hunters the world is your oyster. Along with the 42 Traverse, Waione-Cokers track for experienced riders can also be explored. There are plenty of deer and boar within the wider Tongiriro Forest Park.  Fly Fishers can try their luck at the Whakapapa River with plenty of rainbow and brown trout waiting to be caught. We are a 25 minute drive from Whakapapa Village, the base of Whakapapa Mountain and the beginning of many day walks including Tama Lakes and The Silica Rapids.  If you are keen to tick the Tongiriro Crossing off your bucket list the start of this iconic walking track is a 30 minute drive away and we can recommend local transport options.  Te Araroa and Tour Aotearoa both go through Owhango making it a great pit stop on your adventure
