Nyumbani is a newly opened boutique but a long time in the making. The owner is from Zanzibar; this is a return-to-roots project, restoring a heritage building in Stone Town and running it to feel like you are at home. Our on-site team of three runs the property in person, concentrating on one address rather than a portfolio is a deliberate choice. It allows us to keep standards consistent, to know our guests by name, and to respond quickly when something matters. Stone Town is one of the great walking cities of the Indian Ocean — a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of coral-stone lanes, carved doors, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European trade layered into a single quarter. Nyumbani sits inside that quarter, with most of the city's landmarks within minutes walk (or next door!): the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Sultan's Palace Museum, the Anglican Cathedral that stands on the site of the former slave market, and Freddie Mercury's birthplace, just around the corner. The Forodhani Gardens night food market unfolds along the seafront each evening; coffee at Jaws Corner and bargaining at Darajani Market are unhurried local rituals.
