Ouberg Private Nature Reserve is a family owned farm, providing basic yet comfortable accommodation in our De Kuile Tented Camp. Providing private tents for sleeping in, and a communal kitchen and barbeque area, a communal plunge pool, offers our guests the opportunity to meet fellow travellers, or enjoy friends company if all four tents are booked by the guest. The Tented Camp is located next to a very seasonal stream - birdlife abounds, despite the semi-desert climate and vegetation. Off-grid, no cell reception (but we do have free WiFi at the camp), water from a borehole, limited solar power, surrounded by mountains, and 20 km from the nearest town (Montagu), it is a perfect place to escape city life, unwind, connect to nature, walk, hike, cycle, read. Guests are able to explore much of the 900Ha property on foot - only a few tracks and paths, though. We have marked a 5km walk/hike which takes you past fascinating plants, wonderful vistas, fossils imbedded in rocks, and if you are lucky, spotting a skittish Duiker (antelope). We have built a labyrinth near the camp, in an open space allowing one to enjoy the peace of the mountains and the environment.

We welcome you to Ouberg Private Nature Reserve, our family "farm" in the mountains outside the town of Montagu. The property is our escape from city life - we live in Cape Town, but visit Ouberg as much as we can. To be able to share our special place with other people brings us joy and pleasure. Susan and Richard (owners) both enjoy the outdoors, are keen campers and have travelled extensively in southern Africa. Sue is involved in nature conservation, now in the form of various citizen science projects, largely centred around birds and birding. We have at least three bird ringing, bird atlassing and biomapping workshops a year on Ouberg, hosted by Susan and the Biodiversity & Development Institute at De Kuile Camp. Richard is always fixing or improving something when we are on Ouberg - much of the design and construction planning of the camp was his doing. He really enjoys hosting friends, families and guests on Ouberg. Dan is our Farm & Accommodation Manager - he is a "Karoovian" at heart, and is a wealth of information about the area. Ouberg Private Nature Reserve is located 20 km outside the town of Montagu, Western Cape. The town was voted KFM's Best Dorpie (Best Town) of the Year in 2025. Coffee shops, farm-style restaurants, museums, historical guided walks, wine tours, home of dried fruit, mountain climbing, hiking trails, birding spots, hot springs, golf, tennis, Padel etc are all on offer in the town and surrounds. In 2026 Montagu is hosting Stage 1 & Stage 2 of the prestigious and gruelling mountain cycle race - The Cape Epic. Stage 2 will be cycling past Ouberg Private Nature Reserve. The Montagu area is a great place for adventure and sport-orientated tourism, offering cycle tracks through farms (permitted system bookable through the Montagu-Ashton Tourism Association), hiking routes and those who offer guided slack-packing tours through the area. Down the road from Ouberg, our guests can book nature and game drives at either African Game Lodge or Mont Eco Game Reserve.
