Absolutely great house in the forest! Everything was very clean and the beds were incredibly comfortable. A little far from town but if you have a car it is perfect. Our unit (C) had two stories with a wrap-around walkway on each level and private sauna. Super peaceful surrounding, you can hear the deer in the forest at night. Just avoid the western route into town since it is very narrow for a vehicle (we had a Fit) and there is a sheer drop right off the side of the road 😬 very exciting.

The hotel felt very warm and the onsens are completely amazing! The rooms are big and the bed was very comfortable. At night, most of the stores and restaurants are closed or fully booked so make sure to reserve a sit in advance. The area in the morning is wonderful and was not crowded at all. We really enjoyed it and we would be glad to visit again in the future.

The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, our waitress for our dinner was very fun to converse with, along with everyone else we spoke with. The dinner was very well made, the facilities were beautiful, and our rooms were everything we could’ve asked for. The location is also excellent in the middle of everything, allowing for an easy walk around Kurokawa.

One of the most beautiful hotels I’ve seen. A magical Japanese garden with a hint of smoke from a fireplace and fog as you walk in. Cute magical moss-covered figurines at every turn. The buildings were the perfect blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, with tasteful design and adorable wooden objects in nooks and crannies around the interiors. I can’t wait to come back.

Gorgeous traditional ryokan, with beautifully appointed rooms—we had one of the en-suite onsen baths, and I highly recommend it! The dinners and breakfasts were sumptuous and almost too much food, all very delicious. The staff is friendly, impeccable, and very helpful. The area itself is also lovely, with plenty of shops and nearby onsens to explore.

Amazing place to stay. Had 2 huge rooms to ourselves and access to our own private onsen. Great access to hiking and close to Kurokawa onsen if you want to visit. The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. And...the food - incredible! Do yourself a favor and have your meals there. We regretted not booking dinner for both nights we stayed. the Ryokan Nanjoen is a good option to experience Kurokawa Onsen. It is an old building and it’s not too big. the location is convenient to walk across Kurokawa however it’s not directly next to the river hence the view from the outdoor baths is on building roofs more than nature.

We like the accommodation, the private onsen facilities, the location, the food, the shuttle service from and to the express bus stops, and of course most importantly the staff of the Ryokan. The Kaiseki dinner was served in our room and the Ryokan had accommodated our dietary request. Special shout out to 陈婷, the staff handling our dinner, bedding arrangement and breakfast. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. Thank you for making our trip such a wonderful one and our Ryokan onsen experience a memorable one.

The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. They made our stay there very enjoyable. Breakfast was scrumptious with a wide variety of small bites. Location was beautiful too. The room was very spacious and comfortable. A bit of advice if you’re driving, try not to arrive at night as the street leading up to the ryokan is very narrow and dimly lit.

The "heritage" building, quaint surrounding, amazing onsens, pleasant staff are all reasons to top pick this ryokan. Although the rooms and fittings are jaded, the delicious meals and friendly service are more than enough for a great experience to stay here. Its onsite cave onsen is uniquely rare and a must-try. Location is fantastic, one can leisurely walk around to explore the small town although some shops/eateries seemed permanently closed after the pandemic.
