Really lovely place close to Semuc Champey. Food is good and affordable and the staff is really helpful and kind. They were really helpful to get me transport options to Xela and even woke up at 5AM to make sure I'd catch the bus to Coban.

Wonderful little oasis in the jungle just outside Coban. If you plan to visit Orchigonia and/or if you prefer a quiet place near Coban, it’s perfect! Beds are pretty hard but Otto and family were lovely, the food was good and it was a perfect first stop for us after an overnight flight. Just ask the bus to drop you at Orchigonia turnoff.

It’s a long drive from the Capital 6 hours. Beautiful scenery. Give yourself four days start to finish though. Visit biotopo when you’re here Went to Semuc Champey — rustic but fantastic. DO NOT EAT THE FOOD AT ENTRANCE TO SEMUC CHAMPEY. It’s not clean and not good. Filthy conditions.

I served in the Peace Corps in the late 1980s and lived in a town near Cobán. Much has changed since then, and one of the biggest changes in the growth across the whole country. Traffic and the associated congestion is something I wasn't expecting. For those people that haven't experienced the change, it will be just what it is and not too off putting. I was using Cobán as a base for visiting friends and that served me well. Sadly, I just missed the annual half-marathon that I ran in 1990. I may plan a return trip for that!

Getting around Chipoc is easy, they have now cemented the road down the mountain side so it makes traveling smoother. There is easy access to leaving semuc to nearby towns there are cars leaving (like buses) every few minutes. Everything was absolutely beautiful !!

I only came here for Semuc Champey which was absolutely amazing! The caving experience was an absolute dream. Be warned that the hike to the viewpoint is pretty exhausting, but there's a lot of vendors selling water and coconuts among other refreshments and treats on the way! The town itself isn't that much (at the moment), but I found my 2 night stay to be the perfect amount of time here!

Coban is a relay station to reach other places in Guatemala and as such, there is not a lot going on inside the city itself. I highly recommend taking half a day to visit Las Victorias National Park, which is inside the city limits. A former plantation, the park is replete with the flora & fauna of central Guatemala and has an amazing history! I went by myself on a Sunday morning (since I could not locate an organized tour) and every person I encountered on the trails stopped to chat and offer additional local knowledge.

The road is under so major construction, so if you are walking around, be prepared for mud and loose gravel. If you are to see Semuc Champey, as most people do, it is about a 10km ride from Lanquin. You can hop in the back of a truck or walk (it is a long haul!) If you jump in the back of a truck, be sure to get the front or the side, avoid the middle, it is rough! The chill vibe at El Retiro in Lanquin was fantastic! Great people, right on the river and close to town.

COBAN is a very beautiful town and there is an Ancient Cathedral in front of the Central Park. There's a local market where you can find handwoven typical clothing and other handcrafted products made by the natives. There are good restaurants also, like HDR (Hacienda Don Rafa), El PE-NASCAL, where you can order dishes of Mayan origins, like KACK-IK for example. There are places of extreme beauty near Coban with plenty of very low price transportation. You can visit the Central Market located only 6 minutes on the outskirts of Coban. SO, TREAT YOURSELF BY VISITING COBAN!!!
