"We enjoyed San Pedro La Laguna, and Lake Atitlan. There are plenty of things to see and do there. The Lake is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by mountains, including Volcan San Pedro, The rich cultural heritage of the local people is on display everywhere in their handicrafts, delicious foods, abundant fruits and vegetables, local lore and traditions. I would highly recommend you hire a local guide and his tuk tuk to see it all. Other nearby villages like San Juan,, San Pablo, San Marcos, and Santiago are easily accessible by water Taxi. If you are looking for an extraordinary holiday this place has something for everyone."

"As a former coffee buyer, I've been fortunate enough to experience a wide range of beautiful countries throughout the world, and Guatemala is my absolute favorite. I wanted to take my wife to see this beautiful country for the first time on our 25th anniversary, and fortunately, we landed upon El Picnic! It seems evident to me that this is absolutely the best place to stay in Atitlan. Because the temperatures are consistently cool in the evenings year round with 13-17C (57-62F) at night, the glamping experience of sleeping outside is a no-brainer! The places to stay at El Picnic are beautifully elegant and very impressive architecturally. One of the things I often worry about with AirBnb's and glamping resorts is whether or not they have good bedding and mattresses; no concern with this place, we had a great bed, it was super comfortable with a very charming bathroom as well. You would be hard pressed to wake up to a better view anywhere else in the world. View and comfort aside, Jochen and Gaby are excellent hosts. Gaby was very helpful in arranging transport and providing useful tips in visiting surrounding areas; Jochen is an exceptional chef, mixologist and baker. I can go on and on about the outstanding cuisine, coffee, rum cocktails and fresh baked bread with every meal! Suffice to say, we will be coming back next year. The guests were a pleasure to meet and get to know as well, places like this always seem to attract interesting and fun people. El Picnic has an awesome culture, it's conviviality at its finest!"

The staff was super friendly and always willing to help with anything. The breakfasts were delicious and at night you can't miss the fireplace in the dining room which is perfect for a good wine, hot chocolate or coffee. The views of the lake with the volcanoes are spectacular at any time of day and the hotel is perfect for simply taking a break and enjoying what the day has to offer.

We LOVE this hotel! We weren’t sure what to expect as it’s a new hotel on Booking, but Casa Don Cristóbal did not disappoint!! Everything is brand new and so beautiful down to the last detail. The views from the rooms are no less than breathtaking. Waking up each morning with a direct view of the mountains and the lake was a dream and we loved being able to grab a fresh cup of coffee downstairs and enjoy it from either our balcony or while in bed enjoying our panoramic view. The true highlight though, was getting to know the owner, Nelson. He’s a San Juan local, who has also spent time living abroad and is just such a fun and welcoming guy to everyone! He has such a positive spirit and is always willing to help a fellow traveler in need any way he can. When our ride to Xela fell through last minute, he sat with us and helped us, until it was resolved. He saved us and other guests multiple times with his mental Rolodex of amazing recommendations while we were there and is truly just a genuinely good person. He even checked in with us to make sure we made it to our next destination safely. We can’t imagine staying anywhere else on Lake Atitlan when we return! Thank you Nelson and the amazing Don Cristóbal family!

Nestled in the breathtaking mountainscape surrounding Lake Atitlán, Aviva Boutique Hotel is a true treasure. From the moment we booked, our host Adam reached out to ensure our arrival and stay would be seamless. That thoughtful communication set the tone for what would become an unforgettable experience. Every inch of this place reflects the care, pride, and passion of its owners, hosts, and staff. It’s clear that Aviva is more than a hotel—it’s a lovingly curated haven. The design is both striking and harmonious, with massive, stunning rocks integrated beautifully into the architecture. The way nature and design blend together here is absolutely thrilling to the senses. We were especially touched by the attention to detail and the warm, personalized touches that made us feel not just welcome, but truly valued. The inclusion of local artwork throughout the property added a vibrant and meaningful layer to our stay—each piece telling a story and celebrating the rich culture of the region. Staying at Aviva wasn’t just a vacation—it was a sweet and soulful experience that brought joy to me and my family. We left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already dreaming of our return. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something special, serene, and deeply memorable.

This is truly a gem 💎 I have traveled all over the world and this one is by far my favorite place I’ve ever stayed. Every detail is accounted for with such care and love. As you arrive they greet you at the dock and walk you up to receive a welcome towel and cool drink. Fresh cut flowers decorate your room and burning candles set the mood. The landscaping is phenomenal. They have raised bed gardens growing fresh herbs and produce. Their menu is top notch. Best food I had in Guatemala. I am also a health and wellness lover and their gym is fully stocked and well equipped. I like to do Hyrox/ CrossFit style workouts and I had everything I could need. Directly below is a gorgeous yoga studio which I also loved (I’m a yoga instructor too) and below that is an incredible wet sauna that they cater the scent to your liking ( I did eucalyptus) the pool is phenomenal and peaceful as well. And the amount of hidden spots speckled throughout the property just made this place feel like pure magic. I ended up booking another night because it felt like heaven on earth for me. I wouldn’t change a thing here. I just wish I had had more time. If you get a chance. Book it! You will make some core memories here and it will undoubtedly be superb. 11/10! I can not recommend enough. I will be back! Thank you! 😊

San Pedro is very easy to get around on foot, which makes exploring the town simple and convenient. It’s a great location if you’re young and looking for a lively atmosphere and some nightlife, although the bars tend to close fairly early depending on the day. It’s also very easy to visit other towns from San Pedro, as boats run frequently and cost about 60 quetzales for a round trip, making it simple and affordable to explore more of the lake. One thing to be careful about is the after-party bar, where the staff are known for stealing from customers, so it’s best to bring only the strict minimum with you and keep a close eye on your belongings. Overall, it’s a fun and convenient place to stay, especially for younger travellers who want a social atmosphere while still having easy access to other towns nearby.

This is a very safe place, especially travelling with an 18m old baby. You are best to bring a baby carrier - a pram would not be easy with steep hills and cobblestones. The village is clean and the residents are charming and kind. The handicrafts are amazing and it is possible to source directly from the makers at cooperatives. Wonderful views of the lake and mountains. Our favourite places to eat were Utz Food and Bar Restaurant Lolita Restaurant Rostro Maya Our accommodation at Nuevo Sol was beautiful; clean and welcoming with a great view.

One of the quieter towns on the lake that you can still get to on the main lancha routes. There are hostels and parties on the water but the town and hills above are much quieter and good for beautiful views of the lake. Getting around is easy on foot (if you don't mind hills) or tuk tuk. There are lots of of lovely hiking trails all over the town area. There is a wonderful local market on Saturday morning in the town. If you like to cook with local ingredients, make sure you time your stay to visit.

The market is fabulous for fibery things.

The market is fabulous for fibery things. Backstrap looms, cotton weaving yarn, and finished yardage and garments. NOT touristy, hard to find coffee before ten a.m., and very little English-speaking. It's a noisy and bustling center for locals (rural Mayans). The shops and the market are a bonanza if you are a fiber tourist. If you're looking for an idyllic green and quiet oasis on the lake, you need to look to the outskirts of town, or hop on a ferry to one the many smaller, more tourist oriented communities

It's a great village to walk around.

It's a great village to walk around. It's not just a party town. There are quiet spots. For instance, if you walk up to the main road from the Boat ramp from Panajachel, turn left instead of right, go down to the end and then right, up through the maze of restaurants, places to stay, etc. Very quiet, very nice, very tropical, and different than the heart of the village, which would be if tuned right at the main street - up the hill from the boat ramp, which is only a 2 to 3 minute walk.

The town is up a steep hill so be prepared for some exercise or take a tuk tuk! Gorgeous views! Take a cooking class there like we did! Laid back town, not a lot to do or many restaurants, but a more authentic town that supports its Mayan locals with local wares and cuisines.

As a former coffee buyer, I've been fortunate enough to experience a wide range of beautiful countries throughout the world, and Guatemala is my absolute favorite. El Picnic has an awesome culture, it's conviviality at its finest!

We enjoyed San Pedro. it was picturesque with the beautiful lake and mountains. It was walkable, also easy to get a TukTuk. If you walk up the hill into the village, you get past the tourist streets and see local life. There are plenty of restaurants and shops. Many of the restaurants had seating that looked out over the lake. The souvenir market sellers are not pushy. We went to a Mayan museum, Tzunun' Ya'. It was informative about the formation of the lake and the traditional life of the Mayan people. We didn't see sandy beach areas to throw out a blanket and sit by the lake.
