Overall, there are a few standout things about this place. The location is absolutely gorgeous, it's a little town in the mountains where everywhere you look is just stunning. Other than that, the owner is fantastic, willing to answer any questions and helps with getting to and from the guesthouse - which is quite helpful given it's a few Ks away from the nearest train station.

The homemade Japanese breakfasts were phenomenal and a very good value. Almost unbelievable. Each day was different, with a healthy balance of vegetables, proteins, and carbs (rice). Authentic, and served by a wonderful woman.

Quite a strange setting as it is a 170 years old house. We were the only one staying there at the time. The house is beautiful, breakfast was really exquisite prepared with only home made products. We went for a bicycle tour as suggested and it was a great experience with a lovely local guide (we've lived 15 years in Japan and never take any guide, FYI).

It took us a long time to find a ryokan online that might offer a traditional and peaceful atmosphere at reasonable rates, and our search paid off. Ryokan Beniayu is somewhat remote and is not near busy tourist attractions, but for relaxing, watching birds, enjoying the lake (fantastic sunset view from the bath and room), and tasting some delicious foods this was better than expected. And our private outdoor bath was wonderful, too! We appreciated being welcomed so warmly. A nice stop between Kanazawa and Kyoto, even in the waning winter.

The hotel has a very nice view of Lake Biwa especially for the sunset. The space of the room is not huge but it perfectly fit a family of 4 with open air hot spring bath. The public onsen is also good and quite with nice view. Ard 45-55 mins drive to Gransnow Obuibuki
