I was first drawn to Yanagawa when I learned about the city from the 1987 documentary by the late co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, entitled "The Story of Yanagawa's Canals."
I became not only drawn to the canals themselves, but also to the community of Yanagawa residents who worked incredibly hard nearly a half-century ago to revitalize them. It's truly a remarkable story.
When the opportunity arose for me to head out there for a few days from Osaka, I was so excited! I'm really glad I visited and would love to return one day down the line to experience it again.
Some things you should note: Yanagawa is a lot different than many of the big cities in Japan. It's a lot slower-paced, laid back in many ways, and mostly a home for its residents as opposed to a grand tourist attraction. The canals are its main draw. Outside of that, it's a unique opportunity to enjoy a smaller city that can feel like a rural town compared to the likes of Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Kyoto.

I'd strongly recommend taking the time to ensure that the accommodation you're booking is close enough to any specific areas you wish to visit. Saga itself, is simply a township without too many attractions other than a museum, a castle and a couple of short, pretty walks. If you want to see something further afield, such as Arita or Imari (located in the Saga region), be prepared for quite a bit of travel. Even places to stay near these areas are several kilometers away.

Yanagawa is famous for its Unagi i e grilled eels with a sweet soya sauce. It also has a beautiful canal and you can take a trip down the canal on a boat . It feels like the Venice of Japan. It is a small township and you can walk around the canal to the little shops and eateries. It is far from the bustling cities of Japan and has its own charm.

We walked to the old part of Saga City and discovered the historic Nagasaki Highway or Sugar Road filled with special shops that families have run for generations, the cultural museum and tours of historic homes! There are also new businesses created by younger entrepreneurs so there’s a youthful feeling as well.
