We had a quiet room, which was amazing for our 2 night stay. The staff were amazing and always attentive to our needs. For a family of 3, with suitcases, the room was a little small. However, it was super clean, comfortable, and great bathroom amenities. I would stay again for sure.

Kekuanaoa Homestead was so much more than expected. Clean, beautifully appointed rooms. Quiet, serene, very comfortable. Very close to the airport and to downtown Hilo. I walked into Hilo every day.

I have been to Hilo several times.
I have been to Hilo several times. I love the charm of this old village. We went to the market on Wednesday afternoon and after a little poking around, we had a Thai lunch from a truck which was as good as I have had in Thailand. There were two local musicians who played their favorite songs with a Hawaiian flare. I missed the used book store this time, but made a quick stop at the Discovery Center. Hilo is one of my favorite towns in Hawaii mostly because it isn’t showy and the people are down to earth.

Keaau is an authentic neighborhood on Hawai'i Island vs. a manicured resort. You will get a feel for what it is like to live in Hawai'i, amid the beautiful nature. It is not super close to swimmable beaches, however there is a waterfront park in the neighborhood where you can see the surf pounding against the lava rocks. There is also a local farmer's market nearby. Hilo town is about 11 miles away and has good shopping and some restaurants. The volcano is about a half hour drive away and definitely worth visiting.

Akaka Falls State Park (400 foot waterfall drop, highest on the Big Island) is only a half mile away. Hilo is but a short 10 minute drive away. The town itself only has one restaurant and it is only open for lunch. The gorgeous Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Park is about 5 miles away.

If you are looking for a fancy hotel room, this might not be your place. If you are looking for a Acofortabe place to stay and get a night's sleep so you can go explore what Hawaii has to offer then this is a good option to put a little more money in the exploring budget.

The city is crowded and traffic is busy.
The city is crowded and traffic is busy. The joy it its nearness to many trails and beaches. Lavahloa Chocolate farm, waterfalls, and similar parks were very interesting. Everything is, of course, "Hawaii Priced" s it is expensive. Volcanoes National Park is interesting as well.

Not that Hilo is a busy place, but getting out to Kea'au was worth the relatively short drive. If you are looking for piece and quiet, or a spot to do some star gazing, Kea'au is the place to be.

This is a walk back in time, history of the plantation era.
This is a walk back in time, history of the plantation era. Updated Inn in a sleepy little town. There are a few restaurants and Vintage shop and everyone is friendly. It is a short drive to the Akaka Falls and only about 20min to Hilo. There are many "jungle" walks to explore in the area and an amazing botanical garden on route to Hilo.

Check what else is available against price.
Check what else is available against price. This is basic camping and certainly not in a fruit rain forest. We were ok with it after we adjusted our concept of what it was. Camping in a room that is basically a tent with running water and a toilet. If that is ok then this will suit.

This location, and anything in Hawaiian Paradise Park is perfect for really getting away, however, it is NOT close to any stores, restaurants, etc. You need to be prepared with your own food. I have a friend who lives nearby, so it is perfect for me. I do recommend looking for fruit stands along the Pahoa highway, and Kaloli's restaurant in Orchidland. Pahoa is quaint and has more restaurants and grocery stores. It's worth a visit; not terribly touristy.

The location is my favorite because it is close to the Hilo Airport. The room is compact, but has a fridge and a microwave. The price is acceptable compared with nearby hotels. The bed is large and comfortable.
