Amberley is great for walking as there are many routes that go through the area. There is an extensive museum that I didn't have time to explore and you can hire bikes or a boat down on Houghton Bridge in the summer months. It's a three to four hour walk into Arundel down the River Arun where there's a fair selection of places to eat. Arundel is also accessible by a five minute train ride.

Amberley museum is superb (particularly if the weather is cooperative). The village itself is picture-postcard lovely, and the village shop is disconcertingly well stocked. If you like walking it could hardly be a better location.

Amberley is a beautiful hotel in lovely grounds in a very pretty village. The service is fantastic and the rooms are lovely. The food is perfection, so although it’s very expensive, it is a real treat. I only have one word of advice. If you value your privacy in the lavatory, do not book Winchelsea room as there is no door between the bedroom and the bathroom. I have no idea why that is.

Amazingly beautiful village with wonderfully maintained gardens and thatched roofs, felt like a film set. Great stopping point on South Downs Way, with couple of pubs and the castle that does afternoon teas and fine dining.

Pricey for what you get.

Pricey for what you get. Just because it's in a castle doesn't mean the rate should be so high, especially if they aren't offering anything 'special. Small room, no water pressure, sparce. But bed comfy and nice staff.

Do not expect Ritz standards. This is a hugely character full hotel with many quirks. It is great fun with really friendly staff and can best be described as a really good experience in a truly historic setting

The whole house was damp and uncomfortable Don’t stay there. We had to move to a hotel as it was so damp that we couldn’t breathe and the kitchen smelt so awful that we didn’t eat or drink anything there.
