FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Book a restaurant ahead of trip, I always have done, but slipped up on this occasion, as it was a Saturday, very busy, but luckily on passing lovely French restaurant Chez jules, north gate street, they were able to book us in 8.45pm that night, little late for us normally, but was so grateful. Food was delish and service excellent, there is a service tip included on the bill, which is fine, as we always tip but may have done so twice if not checked the bill.

We were lucky enough to visit Chester in warm, sunny weather, and it was absolutely beautiful. It’s a vibrant city full of history, character and beautiful surroundings, with plenty to see and do. We also loved the huge choice of places to eat and drink, with everything from full English breakfasts and stylish brunches to excellent restaurants, catering for all tastes and budgets. Our one tip would be to book restaurants in advance, as the most popular places fill up quickly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Chester. It’s well worth a visit.

Do walk the whole of the roman walls with some stops in between for the views and a tipple, the river dee and more exploring can be done. A good coffee shop is the cinderbox. I enjoyed a thai tapas meal. I didn't have a car so used the train to go to Liverpool to see friends.

We stayed in Chester for three nights (two days) and definitely could have stayed longer! Chester was a beautiful city to explore and we will definitely return! Our toddler loved exploring the canal and admiring all the “boat trains” along the waterside. We enjoyed a stroll along the city walls and all of the quirky streets. Everything was within walking distance and there were lots of places to eat and drink, with choices to suit everyone in our large party. We also visited the zoo; there was so much to see! We spent 9 hours there and still didn’t see everything! The Bat cave was, by far, our favourite!

The hotel is situated across the road from Chester train station, which was ideal as we were attending an event at Wrexham. It was also only a ten minute walk into Chester City centre. There was a large courtyard/garden for the guests within the hotel building, this was a surprise and was clean, well furnished and well kept. We had breakfast in the Fork and Flavour, which is on the canal about 500 yards up the road towards the City centre, which turned out to be a great choice, excellent service and well priced.

We had a lovely stay at Lloyd's Hotel in Chester. From the moment we arrived, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and happy to assist with anything we needed. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable—perfect for relaxing after a day out exploring. The hotel is conveniently located, just a short walk from the city centre, making it easy to enjoy all that Chester has to offer. A great choice for a comfortable and welcoming stay!

We were upgraded to a balcony room after initially complaining about the original room because of the amount of traffic noise. My complaint was dealt with very quickly. Hotel was convenient for the city centre, it being a short walk away along the canal. Chester station was also a short walk away. We ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel, both of which were very good.
