Rydal Hall is an excellent value for a multi-day stay. The accommodation was basic and plain, yet comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the shower provided ample pressure with good temperature control. There is comfortable seating in the lobby and the dining room is spacious and filled with light from large windows. We had breakfasts and dinner during our stay - breakfasts are served buffet-style with an ample array of hot and cold items. Dinners are pre-ordered and served restaurant-style. The dining staff was attentive. The grounds around the building are very well-tended and beautiful. There are very nice walking trails all around the building. Parking is readily available close to the building.

My husband and I came for an overnight stay with our golden retriever. The room was very comfortable and clean. The setting was absolutely beautiful, a lovely coffee shop across the road selling cakes and ice cream with an outdoor seating area. A fabulous walk alongside the stream which brings you out at a lovely shop and Cafe, with amazing scenery along the way. We enjoyed a lovely evening meal at the Inn and a gorgeous breakfast. Sheep wondering around grazing on the lawn infront of the pub what more could you ask for? 😃

What Guests Said About Rydal:

Scored out of 10, guest rating 10

It has pros and cons.

It has pros and cons. Rydal could be difficult to get to if a road is blocked either from Ambleside or Keswick (unfortunately 2 of the 5 days we were affected). But it is still the best place to stay while in Lake District, being central and in the heart of the Lakes. Quiet and scenic, ideal for nature lovers.

The Hall was near lots of walks and trails, the coffin trail especially was a great example, Grasmere and Loughrigg outside the door, and Ambleside a bus stop away, bus stop at the door. A great Italian Vegetarian restaurant in Ambleside. Never used the car in 5 days. This place is great, ask for a garden view if possible and look out at Arts and Crafts garden designs with a grotto and waterfall.

I liked the hiking opportunities that started right at the doorstep. Also William Wordsworth's Rydal Mount was within about 200 metres uphill. As the bus stop was at the doorstep, we did not need a car at all! We sometimes walked, sometimes took the bus to Ambleside where there are several restaurants and grocery shops. In Rydal Lodge you live in the Lake District athmosphere without a need of going anywhere, but it is easy to reach any attraction you want by bus. We visited Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside, Grassmere and Keswick.

The accommodation did not match our expectations based on the pictures and past reviews on booking.com. The public rooms ( lounge, library) were abysmal, with cat litter tray, damp, lack of carpets, grubby furniture etc. Then the bedrooms ( 4 in total) either showers didn’t work or had damp. Breakfast ok but shambolic- getting a pot of breakfast tea was a feat and the coffee non drinkable. All in all diabolical for the price paid (£270/room/ 2 nights). We have stayed in many places in the Lake District and can honestly say this was our worst experience.

Cabin 3 at Rydal is not a 4 star Hotel but an off grid cabin in the Hills, its a fairly strenuous walk from the car park and has no electric or running water but it is in our opinion PERFECT!!! Don't book it if you like all the creature comforts but book it if you like getting back to nature. Absolutely Awesome place. The toilets/showers are always clean and tidy,if you have a low/wide sporty car you will hate the entrance road as it is very rough, the view from Cabin 3 is also Beautiful, a really relaxing place. Roll on next year!!
