Wow what a spot - felt lucky to be staying in such an historic town / building. It must be incredible to stay here in the mountains during warm weather! Kitchen was very accommodating with my allergies to seafood. Much appreciated

The host, the property and the experience were all incredible. We arrived to Narai-Juku after walking the Nakasendo Trail for three days. Walking the street was absolutely magical and the house did not disappoint! It is right on the main "street" and gives a feeling of immediately being transported back in time. The opportunity to stay there is something my family and I will never forget and we sincerely hope to stay again! The inside of the house has all of the modern amenities while still keeping the original feel. Additionally, as a bonus, the owner is friendly and kind and took the time to make sure we understood how everything worked inside. In the morning he recommended a great breakfast place which was much appreciated.

We loved this place, it is absolutely huge, so spacious and with amazing amenities. Great for a family or group of friends. The town itself is quiet but very cute and a great pitstop if hiking the Nakasendo trail. We loved the little details, such as local bath bombs which were lovely to use after a long day of hiking! We would absolutely stay there again if in the area.

Depends on what you want, we went in winter, some of the stores are closed, but we didn't care, great to get some photos of the streets with no cars, no people, still some great restaurants are open, Loved the quiet. And the Soba near the top of the town (green entrance) was the BEST Soba we have had anywhere and we eat a lot of soba. Enjoy

Narai is one of the biggest villages along the Nakasendo; it's a bit off the beaten path and a 2~3 hour train ride from Tokyo; I highly recommend it; it's a beautifully photogenic place that reflects how villages were 500+ years ago. If you go and like hikes, stay in Narai and walk the Nakasendo from Yabuhara: take the train from Narai to Yabuhara (1 station) and walk back to Narai. This legendary portion of the Nakasendo is considered the hardest because of its elevation, so bring enough water with you. The average time is 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

Narai-juku, Kiso Valley.

Narai-juku, Kiso Valley. A 400 years Edo period time warp, the 34th of 69 stations that was along the Nakasendo that connected the 540 km between Kyoto with Edo (now Tokyo), a path once taken by samurais and shoguns.
