FAQs about hotels in Malacca

History and Culture in Equal Measure

Historic Melaka (or Malacca) is the capital of the Malaysian state of the same name, home to one of the country’s first sultanates. The replica of the sultan’s palace is one of the city’s top attractions.

The end of the sultanate came with the Portuguese conquest of Melaka in the 16th century. Reminders of this period include part of A Famosa fort, and there is also a fort built by the next settlers, the Dutch. Several Dutch churches also remain, including Christ Church with its pinkish façade.

Nowadays, Melaka is a melting pot of various cultures, and Chinese temples, such as wonderful Cheng Hoon Teng, sit happily alongside Hindu temples and mosques. The most spectacularly located of the latter is Masjid Selat (or Malacca Straits Mosque), on stilts above waters lapping an offshore island.

Many Melaka hotels on Booking.com are near the promenade lining the narrow city beach, and others are near more secluded beaches in the suburbs. The Melaka River splits the city into 2, and the further inland you travel along it, the more traditional the buildings become.

Just before the river’s first bend is Jonker Street, the heart of Chinatown and popular for its night markets, while a few miles to the north is Melaka Airport in the Batu Berendam district.

What Guests Said About Malacca:

Melaka/Malacca is one of the historic place in Malaysia.

Melaka/Malacca is one of the historic place in Malaysia. If you like history, this is a best place you can learn and see a lot of artifats from the past. You can learn a lot of things, from the start of empires, its greatest moments, its fallen, and all the ways to present. For me, this is something i learnt in my history book during school time and when you stepped on the land itself, it feels different. Of course, now you also can witness the great moment-Jonker street, the city itself and etc, and the hosptality of Malacca people. They are kind and hardworking. I will said it is one of the well preserved historic place in Malaysia. Compared to other cities around the world like Bangkok, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, it is mixed on historical, modern and traditional culture where you might see the differences. The overall, Melaka/Malacca is a good place to cleanse your mind and you don't have to think what to do next. Just eat well, drink well and sleep well. This historic city are welcoming you.

Nice for a short family trip.

Nice for a short family trip. A 3 days 2 nights is more than sufficient to explore the streets filled with nice cafes, food and museums such as Baba museum, history of malacca etc., and still have time to catch a movie at one of the malls.

We liked visiting the cultural heritage of Melaka and learning about the history of the area. The Sultanate Museum linked with the Stadhuys were superb and we learnt such a lot. This led to us visiting the Portuguese settlement and a Chinese restaurant which gave us an authentic culinary taste of the area. During busy times roads are closed off, but we found that the "Grab" drivers were excellent in getting around and enabling us to visit anywhere that we wanted to go.

Melaka is a captivating destination that feels like a walk...

Melaka is a captivating destination that feels like a walk back in time. Wandering through the historic streets, you can truly imagine what life was like in the early days. For food lovers, the local cuisine is a major highlight; the chicken rice balls, authentic Peranakan dishes, and refreshing chendol are absolute must-tries. What really made the trip special, however, was the warmth and kindness of the locals, who were always ready to help a clueless tourist like me find their way. While the historical heart of the city is charming, I did notice that once you venture outside the central area, there are several areas that feel neglected. It is a bit disappointing to encounter abandoned or incomplete buildings, which can look quite eerie and take away from the otherwise vibrant atmosphere of the city. Overall, Melaka is a rich cultural experience that I would recommend, provided you focus your time on the well-preserved heritage sites. Key Takeaways for Families: * Historical Atmosphere: The streets offer a fantastic living museum experience that is great for sparking children's imaginations about history. * Must-Try Local Foods: Chicken rice balls are very kid-friendly, and the local dessert scene, especially chendol, is a hit with families. * Local Hospitality: The friendly nature of the residents makes navigating the city with little ones much less stressful. * Areas to Note: Stick to the main historical zones, as some outskirts may lack the maintenance and development found in the city centre.

The hotel is situated in a quite residential area, slightly away from the old city centre (15 min walk or easily by Grab, mind that some streets in Malacca doesn't not have good pavement for pedestrans) The rooms were half the size of our previous hotel but we loved it twice as much. It was not luxury but did offer all basic things you'd need. The room was clean and the staff were friendly. We highly recommend a nearby restaurant cafe "W&L Restaurant Cafe" for its Sarawak style food, sweet and lovely hosts and atmosphere.

This boutique hotel is perfectly located, right in the centre of Malacca. As others have said, it’s like staying overnight in a museum. The attention to detail is incredible. Breakfast was like an introduction to the very best Malaysian breakfast food available, super interesting and tasty. Loved staying here and would definitely return!
