Allie, our host, was incredibly friendly and helpful and provided excellent information about the area. The furnishings and decor are quirky and fun, especially if you like Victoriana. We really enjoyed having our cup of tea and breakfast on the old-fashioned china while sitting at the charming breakfast table in the sunny bay window.

House on the Hill in Owaka was hands down the most amazing place of our entire vacation. From the moment we arrived, it felt warm, cozy, and effortlessly stylish — the kind of place that instantly makes you relax. We were four adults, and the layout was absolutely perfect. The detached bedroom gave just the right amount of privacy and felt like its own little retreat. Waking up to those gorgeous sunset views (yes… even the evening glow lingering into morning light was magical!) was something we’ll never forget. Evenings were our favorite — sinking into the bean bags, soaking up the quiet, watching the sky turn gold and pink, and then staying out to admire the stars. It was peaceful in a way that’s hard to put into words. This place is so perfect we honestly started talking about moving in permanently. It’s an absolute gem. If it’s available — book it immediately. You won’t regret

Truly tranquil setting in nature, with hosts quietly and calmly meeting our every need and making us feel welcome. A huge rain+wind storm passed through in the night, and the tiny cabin was cozy and comfie.

Locations, facilities, room, cleanliness. Accommodation is right near Sea Lions beach, we’ve seen them every time we headed towards the Surat Bay. They were 10m away, playing, swimming, relaxing. Amazing experience.

Once the power came back on all was good. I had camping gear to make a cuppa. It was a cold night. Lovely unit. Not very sound proof. Had everything I needed. Comfortable bed. Thank you

Owaka is a small town with limited facilities (although the Lumberjack Cafe is really first-rate). The surrounding area is the draw. Catlins Lake is right outside of town and, since it is really an estuary, it is a great place to observe shorebirds while surrounded by fields of sheep. The coast itself is characterized by wide beaches punctuated by rocky headlands and coastal forest, and abundant waterfalls. It is a really fine area for a three to five day stay.

Owaka is a small village, it has an excellent Inn especially for accommodation. The village has a small but well stocked supermarket, it has two restaurants and two cafes. It is quiet and peaceful. It is well located for visits to sites along the coast. It has a modern museum that gives you information on the history of Owaka it also had an art exhibition.

Amazing place and very central to all the amazing walks and sights to see in the Caitlin’s. Great pub for drinks and meals, shops, petrol and a cool playground for the kids! The information centre/museum etc was also great with very knowledgeable staff.

We all loved the local Museum, it was excellent. Also the bush walks to waterfalls, the Nuggets and Lost Gypsy Gallery were all wonderful! There's so much to do and see, we needed more time to see the Cathedral Caves; next time!

Lovely wee town!

Lovely wee town! Make sure if you see the country store or little boutique stores open, you go and have a look!! My biggest regret is leaving that to our last day as there was so much to see! The park also has a nice picnic area too! Four square staff are lovely!!

Many environmental places nearby to visit.

Many environmental places nearby to visit. Exceptional museum/library that is worthwhile visiting. A few shops but interesting items. Local pub & cafes offer range of food. All highly recommended. Our must visits = Tunnel Hill (Take a torch), McLean Falls (track has a number of steps). Owaka is walking friendly everywhere.
