Beautiful property. Kind people. Went out of their way to help us because somehow we got the dates mixed up. Brought us fresh eggs from their chickens and fresh bread. Best place on a 2 wk NZ trip.

The unit was a lot larger than I thought. Three large bedrooms. Well equipped. There’s a great patio with ocean views. Jan and Stu were very friendly and welcoming. Close to some great hikes and there’s a couple of kayaks we were able to use.

We only stayed for one night, but the room was excellent and would easily be just as good for an extended stay. The snacks were appreciated and more than expected. Breakfast cereals had a choice with fresh fruit and yoghurt. The position was beautiful with the canal in view. All in all a good place to stay.

Accommodation and hosts could not have been better: we could...

Accommodation and hosts could not have been better: we could enjoy both place and people. This location is out of town, in a rural setting. This was a plus for us, but a car is definitely needed to get there. If you aren't a dog lover, this is also to note - the dog was also part of the family at this location. We self-catered here. There are lots of great restaurants in Whangarei too. There's lots of hiking to do in this area, and one under-rated place to see is the Quarry Gardens. This is a delightful, enchanting place to visit.

It's a spectacular spot.

It's a spectacular spot. Explore options include day walks to Mt Manaia, Bream Head, swimming, boating (ALWAYS wear a lifejacket, even if you can swim). Tip: check the tide chart. Make sure you fuel up in Whangarei. Take care if driving at night as there are no lights in many places and some narrow winding spots. There are a few local cafes and restaurants for lunch or dinner - but not on a Monday night. We ended up going to McLeod Bay Fish and Chips (also does Asian takeaways and ice creams), but this closes at 7.30 pm. (The snapper was excellent, and you can get kumara chips if you like).

Loved the beautiful walks on offer. stayed in McLeods Bay...

Loved the beautiful walks on offer. stayed in McLeods Bay which was central and meant we were only a short drive from several other lovely bays. Ocean beach and Smugglers Bay definitely worth a visit as well as Pataura. Water is crystal clear and the beaches are so clean. The Pines Golf Course is a great course. Parua Tavern does great meals and is in a lovely spot. You can sit right out by the water or up on the outside deck - there is also a covered indoor deck area and an inside section too. McLeod Bay takeaways do great fish and chips and the Indian takeaway at Parua Bay also do great meals. Overall we loved the tranquility (we went at beginning of April so not many holiday makers around and it was like we had the place to ourselves. A beautiful part of NZ and we'll be going back again.
