The town of Biggar on the edge of Scotland’s Southern Uplands is believed to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the present A702 is on the line of the former Roman road, linking the fort at Musselburgh with the Clyde Valley. The Normans followed in the 12th century and Biggar Burn was finally bridged, providing the first permanent crossing. The town today, with the market place at its centre, retains the linear layout showing the historical importance of the A702. It has many shops, cafes and bars and is particularly renowned for its collection of museums reflecting the history of notable individuals from the area.
