Property info
Set beside the Hawkcombe Stream in a quiet corner of Exmoor National Park, Glen Cottage is a characterful whitewashed cottage that has been thoughtfully updated, blending original features with fresh, considered interiors. The sound of the stream gives the cottage a deeply secluded feel, despite being just a short walk from Porlock village.
Sleeping up to 4 guests across two bedrooms, the cottage is accessed via steps down from road level into a patio area edged with cottage-garden shrubs. The sitting room has deep green walls, an exposed ceiling beam and a wood-burning stove set into a stone fireplace, along with hand-crafted local furniture in spalted beech. The adjacent dining area features a spalted beech live-edge table seating four, with bi-fold doors opening onto the paved patio. The kitchen has sage green units, oak worktops and a Belfast sink, plus a small bistro-style breakfast table. Upstairs, reached via a pine staircase with a split landing, the main bedroom is a generous double with a super-king-size bed, an original cast iron fireplace and a wall-mounted TV, while the twin room has sage-painted panelled headboards and garden views. A shower room with toilet and hand basin serves both bedrooms.
The kitchen is well equipped for self-catering, with an electric oven and hob, larder fridge with small freezer compartment, microwave, kettle, toaster, pod coffee machine and cafetière, plus an integrated washing machine and slimline dishwasher. The sitting room's wood-burning stove comes with a starter basket of logs and kindling. Downstairs benefits from efficient electric underfloor heating, with storage heaters in the bedrooms and a heated towel rail in the bathroom. WiFi is included at no extra cost, along with bed linen and towels. Two smart TVs are provided, one in the main bedroom and one in the sitting room.
Neighborhood info
Porlock is a historic village on the edge of Exmoor National Park in Somerset, in a sheltered vale between the moor and the Bristol Channel coast. Its heritage stretches back to Saxon times.
The meandering High Street is lined with independent shops, including a traditional butcher, chemist, hardware shop, post office, two convenience stores, art galleries, and a cash machine. Most shops keep hours of 9am to 5pm, often extending during the summer season.
The harbour hamlet of Porlock Weir is approximately one mile to the west and makes a lovely walk or a short drive. There you will find a 15th-century tidal harbour, a pub, restaurants, cafes, and independent shops and galleries.
Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 6 miles away. Here you will find larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco, Morrisons and Lidl on the outskirts with longer opening hours), high street banks, and a range of other independent shops.
