United StatesWe had a wonderful stay in Ballater. The hotel was quaint, comfortable, exceptionally clean, and wonderfully quiet — exactly what we were looking for. Having the bar and restaurant conveniently on site made everything so easy, and both dinner and breakfast were absolutely outstanding. The owners and staff were incredibly warm, personable, and welcoming throughout our stay. The food and drinks were a definite 10/10. With its convenient location and excellent hospitality, we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

Food was very good at the local restaurant plus a moderate selection of good whiskies . Cozy fireplace was lit during the evening. Great staff!

If you can go on the private tour you should go.
If you can go on the private tour you should go. It is a must. It is so interesting and so unique. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. You can just see the Royals as they tell the stories and show you the different rooms. It's just fabulous.

The entrance closes at 4 p.m., so if one has a longer distance to arrive there and only stay one night, you cannot walk the grounds, even if you don't want to visit the castle. This should be thought over. For us walking the grounds and taking pictures of the castle from a distance would have been absolutely sufficient.

If you have visited other Royal houses and expect the same...
If you have visited other Royal houses and expect the same then you will be disappointed. It is basically a walk through gardens designed to flower in August when visitors are not there and a trip into the ballroom. Beware - hardly any seating for not suitable for elderly or those who need to rest. Very small mews tearoom and currently temporary toilets, but new services are being built. Long walk back to exit with NO seating. Sadly I felt unwell and being unable to rest did not help. I know it's a Royal summer residence but we got the feeling they did not realy want visitors and they were not catered for adequately. Visit Windsor and Sandringham, much nicer!

As beautiful as I thought it would be.
As beautiful as I thought it would be. I was stunned by the massive girth of some of the trees and their incredible heights. The King is now planting many more trees and redoing the formal gardens. Since he has an incredible sense of design, the gardens will be spectacular in a few years. I loved the walks around the estate and all the informational signs explaining the history of buildings and traditions. The estate has done a marvelous job.

Grounds were disappointing and need tidying up. Although the Royals use this for their late summer retreat, it is open for long periods to the paying public and activities to keep tidy should not be geared to the Royals arriving .
However, the surrounding area is stunning

Our second visit here and it is a superb place to stay. Tony and Natalie are superb hosts and keep their place in the best condition. Ample parking and the apartment we had was roomy and had everything you might need for a short stay. It is ideally situated in Ballater to explore the town or drive to Balmoral Castle, Braemar and other attractions in the area. Tony is a great cook and made us a wonderful breakfast and is very knowledgeable about the region.

No. 45 is located right in the adorable town of Ballater and is well-situated for a visit to Balmoral Castle or the surrounding area. There is ample free parking and check-in was fun because the host (Adam) was so engaging. Our room was wonderful, with a regal, yet comfortable four-poster bed. The full Scottish breakfast was amazing--homemade granola and preserves, scones, and delicious locally-sourced meats and eggs--all served in the conservatory overlooking a tranquil garden.

There was so much to like here. The room was a nice size and comfortable. The breakfast was fantastic and they had excellent gluten free options. The location in Ballater was walking distance to everything. Ballater itself was lovely and so close to Balmoral Castle. Helen had some great suggestions too that were really helpful. We highly recommend and would stay there again.

Hotel is a beautiful late 19th century mansion located close to Balmoral castle and steps away from a Cambus O'may suspension bridge. The staff was very friendly, rooms are clean. Breakfast had a good selection of food.
