Built to house the remains of Saint Mark, this 9th-century basilica is a Byzantine-inspired masterpiece. Beautiful spot even though we did not realize the face of it would be under construction. Tip: Book your ticket or tour ahead of time... we wanted to go inside but did not plan ahead and time slots were booked same day. The area is also definitely busier on the weekends. We enjoyed taking photos and strolling around much more during the week.

Took the complete tour including the balcony. Prepare to climb steep narrow steps. Take a guide tour or stand in a long line. Amazing gold mosaics on the ceilings and incredible marble mosaics on the floor.

Crowded and the best views blocked by metal barriers and Tarps - one end was scaffolding getting ready for a stage to be built for a concert! - There are never enough seats for people to rest - if you sit at an empty restaurant table, you get asked to move on unless you buy something!

Be there one hour before opening - ideal time to avoid long queue and to queue in bearable temperatures. Take the "full options" visit - the simple tour of the cathedral is nice but you are missing a lot of the most impressive attractions This is a church : mind your clothing (especially, no bare shoulders allowed)
