CanadaWe were booked here but upgraded to the Te Waonui hotel so please recognize that this review is actually of that facility. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly. We enjoyed the Chef’s 5 course Degustation at the Canopy Restaurant at the hotel. Breakfasts provided plenty of variety. This was a great base to visit both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.

United StatesThe location in the middle of the temperate rainforest and its access to the Franz-Joseph glacier is great. Ample parking. The hotel is beautifully decorated, and you feel connected to nature. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable and well organized. We loved the bird sounds playing in the room and the bathroom. Awesome turndown service at night with glass water bottles & delish chocolates. Great laundry facilities on site. They truly matched the sounds of the real birds outdoors. The staff was absolutely 100% professional, helpful and accommodating. First class! The five course dinners were delicious and we really enjoyed the view tables They reserved for us each evening. We really like the all inclusive aspect of this retreat as you are pretty isolated once you arrive in France Joseph. This is a cozy spot to end up in at the end of the day!

Our last minute decision to book to go to the glacier was...
Our last minute decision to book to go to the glacier was rewarded by a wonderful event filled day, where due to weather the incredible staff of our tour operator were preparing for the rare event of us possibly needing to spend the night in the glacier due to weather restriction that would mean the helicopters couldn’t fly in safely to collect us. The weather did fine up enough for a speedy retreat off the glacier but we did get to spend more time up there. ( We were rather excited by the possibility of camping there for the night!) These experiences are dictated by optimal alpine weather conditions so be prepared to the possibility of NOT being flown up at the last minute if the weather conditions are right.
It’s a very special once in a lifetime treat that is expensive but worth every cent when you consider how many staff, equipment and logistics are in place for an average person to be transported onto a glacier!!

Damage to the path means its only a 15 minute walk to a view point now, but you are further away.
The constant noise of helicopters means you aren't really going to see the birds or feel you are particularly close to nature.
The walks and car parks are excellent. It's just a bit of a sausage factory in summer.

Convenient and gorgeous location. Directly across the street from Franz Josef Glacier Guides, so if you’re doing a heli-hike it’s incredibly convenient. The room was very comfortable.

Great location. Short walking distance to restaurants and heli service offices to fly you to the Franz Josef Glacier and the Fox Glacier. Friendly staff and comfortable bed and pillows. Great kitchen if you decide to make your own lunch or dinner. Nice spa to unwind and relax after a lengthy hike.

We booked two accommodations for a group of 5, an en-suite for a couple and a 2 bed apartment for 3 singles. Location was convenient for Franz Josef Glacier related activities and hikes. The two bed room apartment we booked was spacious and well appointed, it was convenient to have two bathrooms. The reception graciously accommodated our late check in request after their office hour times as we had a full day of activities planned.

The room had nice fern trees growing outside. The "cottages" although separate from each other are tightly bunched around the carpark. The location was good for the short walks near the Franz Josef glacier, and is almost next door to the very good Alice May restaurant. The room has a kitchenette area, and also has a table for dining on.

Perfect retreat in the rainforest with easy access to Franz Josef glacier activities and hikes! Right in the small town center, everything is walkable. We stayed in one of the gecko cottages which was perfect for us! These seem updated and new. These have a large shower, tv and small kitchenette which were great! Felt very secluded in the rainforest while actually being very close to everything. The jacuzzi and sauna are right by reception for all the guests to use. There were many accommodation options here for all types of travelers.

The property is in a good location just outside of the town of Franz Josef Glacier. It was clean and comfortable and spacious inside. The kitchen was pretty well equipped, although it would have been useful to have a tea towel to dry dishes. We appreciated having 2 bathrooms and the laundry facilities were very useful. The area was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay.
