Windermere is a great location as a base for exploring the Lake District as it is a hub for rail and bus routes. Days out using the buses is far less stressful than using a car - see the views, and have no worries about parking etc. Do look at the map. Windermere IS NOT next to Lake Windermere - but a long walk / bus journey away to Bowness-on-Windermere. Windermere is quieter, but still with many shops/cafes . By contrast Bowness-on-Windermere is a very popular destination for coach-trips, with many "tourist shops" and the starting point for many ferry/cruises onto the lake. My choice would be to stay in Windermere and then have a half day visit Bowness-on-Windermere.

We loved everything about it. A beautiful lake with lovely boat trips over to Ambleside which was amazing. Lots of shops and great pubs and places to eat especially The Albert pub who do a fantastic sunday roast.I highly recommend staying here it's the second time we've been in 5 months and we'll definitely be back again.

We stayed at Waterhead, delightful area. Our golden retriever could happily go into the water. Busy but not too much. Liked the bars for sitting out by the lake and the little coffee shop. We went into Ambleside town. Very very busy, struggled to park, but did manage eventually. We thought the town looked a little bit tired.

Newby Bridge is a lovely area at the bottom end of the Lakes. It is only a short distance to Fellfoot, a National Trust area by the lake. It isn't too far to Kendal, Ulverston, Cartmel, Windermere and Bowness. There is a station for the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway and a lovely riverside walk from the Swan Hotel to Lakeside station. We stayed at the Swan Hotel which is lovely place alongside the river but 2 nights wasn't long enough for us.

Good walks to Wray Castle and Claife Viewing Station overlooking Windermere. Unfortunately Wray Castle was shut for renovation during our visit (Nov 2025)m but the cafe here was open for business and doing a roaring trade. Location is handy for Hill Top (Beatrix Potter) and Hawkshead where there are ample places to eat.

The location is a great place for walkers to enjoy without having to get in their cars and drive elsewhere. The walks from the town are many and of various choices between easy and difficult. A hard walk up to the High Street with its fantastic views of all the lake district fells or a gentle stroll up the Troutbeck valley to the Tongue are both enjoyable and relaxing in their own ways to name but two of the many.

Pretty hamlet with 2 excellent pubs serving great food. Easy walking area from the hamlet and access to more challenging walking not far away. Away from the tourist traps of the Lake District. Would recommend eating at The Hare and Hounds for upmarket gastro pub food. The Masons Arms also serves good pub food. The Punchbowl at Crosthwaite is a 10 min drive away and is a very good restaurant
