"There is loads to do in Whanganui and we managed to see a lot in a short time. It was awesome to watch glass artist Kate? at work at NZ Glassworks. We had a fantastic meal at the Rutland Arms. We visited the Bason Botanic Gardens which were lovely. You could easily spend a whole day there. Kai Iwi beach was great for a walk. Virginia Lake is a beautiful place for a walk and the Winter Garden is magical! We drove up to the War Memorial Tower and to the Durie Hill Elevator. The Regional Museum is great and if you are interested in historic buildings they are everywhere!"

The room was very clean, the bathroom was well presented and good to have a kitchenette too, which included a microwave and airfried (no elements). There is limited choice of accommodation in town, which is why I ended up selecting this motel

The rooms were spacious, comfortable and private which made my stay perfect. The bathroom facilities were clean and well maintained. There was no breakfast at the hotel, however, the venue was central of all convenient stores along with restaurants within walking distance. The beds were comfortable too; this allowed me to get more rest in peace and feel more rejuvenated. The venue provides a pool directly outside the room which was therapeutic. Parking was conveniently outside my room and. the venue provides a laundry facility. Just like a home away from home I would recommend this beautiful haven to anyone who prefers comfort.

Johnny has excellent communication, a well-equipped house, and relaxing scenery with unique touches throughout. I stayed for two nights with my two Shih Tzu dogs and didn’t leave the farm, enjoying the farm animals, birds, and the intriguing sights and sounds, and also spent time reading his book about Renagour, which added to the experience. Fig is super friendly, and a joy. Fresh honey or feed the horses, plenty to explore. Check-in and check-out were straightforward, and it’s an easy drive from Wellington. I will definitely return when I need downtime.

Exceptional accommodation - a lot of thought and care has gone into making the stay sensational. The space is modern with smart and attractive furnishings and decor. Super comfy bed and love the little outdoor seating area with great views across the river to Bastia Hill. Fantastic shower, and easy parking. little to no road noise. just a short walk to CBD and river walks right on the doorstep. Thank you Rory

The location of the holiday park, good area with the playground & beach a walk away. The cabin we booked was close to the bathroom, kitchen & saltwater pool 🩵 (a favorite of ours) easy for supervision when you have little ones. The atmosphere was welcoming & friendly. Very clean & well run you can tell they take very good care of the place. The hospitality was fabulous 10/10.

Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Art Gallery is exceptional.

Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Art Gallery is exceptional. There's a good range of funky cafes and bars (check out the craft beer spots on Drew Ave and the Papaiti Gin bar) and the Saturday Farmers Market is definitely worth a visit. Other places to check out are the Durie Hill tower and elevator, the walk along the river and Paige's book shop. Fuirther out of town there is Bason Botanic Garden and Kai Iwi beach.

Lots of eateries to choose from and the Rusty Nail Bar is a little gem with great food. One hour drive to ski fields on Mt Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park. We drove from Hamilton so only 2 hours distance. Be sure to bring warm clothes in winter. It can be cold.

We were quite surprised that the town was looking so deserted compared to just couple of years ago when we last visited. Many of the shops on the main street (and just about all the ones on the side streets) were unoccupied and boarded up. Having only stayed one night, we didn't have much time to do more than walk up and down the main street to see the shops, but the town has quite a run down feel to it. The activities run by the Forgotten World Motel were mostly not operating at this time of the year (September). If you plan to do the adventure activities offered by the Motel, then visit from mid-October onwards when they are fully operating.

My connections with Taumarunui are mostly through the Tiger Moth Club which was formed there in 1969 and returns every October to the best grass aerodrome in New Zealand. We always get a great welcome from the townspeople - and the weather is (usually) ideal for open-cockpit vintage biplanes.
