"Manteigas is a beautiful, walkable hilltop town. If you have time to fit this into your trip, definitely do! We spent 2 nights there (1 full day) and wish we had a little more time. The town has everything you need - Multi Banco ATMs, grocery, cafes, and restaurants. It's also a great central location for nearby hiking. We loved seeing this part of Portugal because it was so different than the south, north, and west regions of the country. There are a lot of great restaurants within the town to choose from (wish we had more time to try them all!); we highly recommend eating at Duval. The food was delicious, service was top notch, and we had 2 bottles of wines from the region that were delightful. Other 'must-do' activities: Go take a tour of the Burel Wool Factory! It was amazing!!! Do not miss this! And then also walk next door to the Ecola Wool Factory to peruse their beautiful wool coats and clothing! We purchased a few items from them at reasonable prices and had so much fun picking them out! They offer their coats/clothes in different colors - when they didn't have the color we wanted on hand, they actually custom made it for us within 1.5 days so that we could take it with us!! There was so much to do and enjoy in this town that we 100% would recommend it and go back."

Guarda

One of 892 reviews:
"Guarda is a city where history and hospitality intertwine beneath the vast Portuguese sky. From the moment of arrival, the warmth and kindness of its people shine, making each encounter memorable. The city’s compact layout is perfect for wandering, though the hills reward every step with breathtaking views. The cathedral stands at Guarda’s heart, with its towers offering sweeping vistas over red rooftops and winding alleys. Nearby, the castle and medieval tower are silent keepers of centuries gone by, each providing a unique perspective of the land below. If time permitted, the wild peaks of Serra da Estrela would beckon nature lovers and hikers with their rugged beauty and scenic trails—a promise for another day. Evenings bring culinary delight: Simple.Guarda offers outstanding Italian cuisine, while charming cafes invite guests to linger over coffee and pastries. Shops and markets bustle with life, from tempting kitchen stores to fragrant flowers and perfectly ripe fruit. The ancient, winding streets—paved with time-worn stones—invite exploration, each turn revealing new surprises like parks, a chocolatier, and inviting squares. Our visit felt all too brief. As we left, Guarda remained with us—a city to savor, to wander, and to remember fondly for its gentle magic and the warmth of its people."

This without a doubt the best accommodation I have stayed in Portugal. You notice about everything that the owner has paid attention to every single detail about the accommodation to make your stay feel perfect. Absolutely no shortcomings. Every aspect was simply perfect. If you need to stay in the Trancoso region this is without a doubt the best place to stay. Also the breakfast was so well taken care of with home make cakes. Thank you!

Found this place somewhat randomly and spent 3 night in their basic rooms, with the deck. The architecture, interior design, food, and most importantly service were impeccable and very high value for the money we spent. Especially the staff.. they went above an beyond to make sure you felt welcome and pampered. Great location if you want to spend a bit of time away and up in the mountains (hills) of Portugal. Highly recommended. p.s. We did make a stop for dinner at the higher rated (5 star) hotel owned by the same group. This location compared to that felt nicer. Both the interior design and people felt a lot warmer here.

This is a very isolated but unique hotel. Difficult to find staff as the facility covers a large area and most staff we did find, have multiple responsibilities. This is a wonderful town from which to explore the area. We visited in early March, just before the Almond Blossom festival. Unfortunately we had to leave right before the festival started, but we saw the preparations and it looks like a fun event. The Coa Archeology Museum and tours to the rock art sites are a must-see. Especially the night tour. It’s worth it!! This area is also a great base for exploring the local castles and wine growing areas. Gorgeous scenery, friendly people and no crowds!!

Trancos is an ancient walled town set high up on a granite plateau, A wonderful base for hiking on the Aldeas Historicas paths and and having more than its full share of excellent restaurants. Don't expect lively evenings in street cafes, this is a small rural town which is trying to get on the tourist map. It is also a good stopping off point for a number of boulder castle villages in the district.

Guarda was our first entry point to Portugal as we drove to...

Guarda was our first entry point to Portugal as we drove to the Algarve. from Spain. Check in was very laid back and easy and we were quickly settled in our apartment at Hotel Santos, a family run establishment. The old and young staff provided a level of unintrusive efficient service that some major hotel groups should learn. This is the highest city in Portugal rising above 1200 metres in the Estrella mountains. The view from our window was breathtaking looking out across the valleys below and inhaling the clean cool evening mountain air. We were surprised to find a really vibrant population of around 39000 inhabitants, many shops, cafes and restaurants in such a small community. Guarda today is an important hub for the region where many roads and railway lines meet, providing excellent transport links in every direction. Guarda as its name suggests was a defense against the Moors in days gone by and has many wonderful sights that are well preserved to this day. We found a busy square very close to the hotel almost devoid of tourists where locals sat for hours just chatting and enjoying the restaurants in the summer heat, ensuring that their way of life wasn't taken over by loud music and the chaos of high density tourism. A small part of the square had become a mini water park where children played with hoses and an improvised slide. We joined the people watching the setting sun while enjoying a light snack and the mandatory beer to accompany it. A very comfortable night and excellent breakfast prepared us for the drive to the Algarve. You cant beat this lifestyle for sheer beauty and relaxation.

Manteigas is a lovely quiet and friendly town.

Manteigas is a lovely quiet and friendly town. There are numerous places to stay and restaurants which serve lunch and evening meals. Two supermarkets allow ease for those self catering. The wool mills are interesting but for those interested in walking there are a wealth of reasonably well marked walks. Unfortunately, the tourist information centre couldn’t help with maps but the Hotel Villa where we stayed were very helpful and had a of printed routes available. Everyone in the town are friendly and you really get the impression that they want visitors to enjoy their holiday.
