52Views Castlemaine is a beautifully curated apartment that feels both indulgent and effortlessly serene, its sweeping vistas unfurling like a quiet invitation to slow down. Bev is the sort of host who elevates a stay into an experience—warmly attentive, wonderfully responsive, and greeting you with flaky, delicious pastries that set the tone for the days ahead. With a fantastic location just a stroll from restaurants, parks, shops, and the train station, it’s an ideal weekend escapade—yet tranquil enough to double as a writers’ retreat, where you can settle in, focus, and let the world fall pleasantly away.

The tent was spacious and well appointed; had pretty well everything you could ask for and expect from a luxury family-sized experience... better than most hotels that we've stayed at. The amazing thing was how clean the tent was - including all the cups/utensils and bedding. Just brilliant. The AC was quiet and worked well to warm the tent. The claw-foot bath on the decking was beautiful. The beds and bathroom was brilliant, and our 12/16yo actually had fun in the children's nook.

Historic Victorian Goldfields town with a lot of well...

Historic Victorian Goldfields town with a lot of well preserved buildings & preserved history. An excellent Tourist Information Centre in the excellent original Market Hall building, containing quality art exhibits & displays. A wonderful old Art Gallery and Goldfields Museum underneath that features the Mount Alexander Diggings and other nearby towns & localities BUT no profile on Maldon, the National Trust's "Australia's First Notable Town" classification that falls within the Mount Alexander Shire. The Castlemaine Cemetery at Campbell's Creek was rewarding to visit to look for ancestors' graves but disturbing also to learn of the recent news revelations about previous trustees' desecration & removal of many old graves to resell the plots. An illegal practice over many years now stopped by the law with a now recovery project by the current trustees. Also the town has plenty of well stocked shops & restaurants, with the Vietnamese being very good.

This was a great town to enjoy both nature, walking through the botanical gardens and lots of arts and culture. Loved The Mill - fantastic range of local produce and offerings. Fabulous cafes to eat at. Friendly, interesting people and local businesses that had some unique experiences to offer. One of the best bookstores to spend time in, especially if you have quirky interests.

Short distance from Melbourne; one and a half hours.

Short distance from Melbourne; one and a half hours. Beautiful historic buildings. Wide streets and attractive deciduous trees and native flora. Birds delightful. Rural feel amid excellent dining choices. Friendly townsfolk and wonderful bookshop. Botanic gardens delightful. Happy to return to the quiet seclusion of the cottage after walking 8 kms around the town. Surprised that the town doesn’t make more of its connection with ‘The Wild Colonial Boy’. Forced to sing to locals to explain our interest in bushes ger and convict history. Found the ‘Boom Town’, Woollen Mill, The Mill labeling confusing. It’s a huge attraction with Restaurants, wine bars, cheese and chocolate shops but not well marketed in tourist advertising. Discovered the complex by accident when leaving botanic gardens. Lovely town for families and tourists.

Castlemaine has to be one of the most beautiful of country Victoria's towns. Rolling hills and greenery. Beautiful views everywhere. Historic buildings and homes. Great day and night life. And The Mill's Vintage Bizarre was wonderful. Went to two amazing art exhibitions. A very lovely three day break.

Lilydale Lodge is an immaculately restored and gracious farmhouse. Set just outside of Castlemaine’s busy centre in a beautifully quiet location, it is a place where you can catch your breath. Please do not let the shared bathroom put you off - we did not once encounter the other guests staying there. There are 2 toilets which very adequately cater for the small number of guests that the Lodge hosts. The hosts Irma and Oliver (and perky Pinot) were lovely, the bed very comfortable and the facilities excellent.
