Under new management, Butterworth Cottage is beautiful, simple, sustainable and welcoming accommodation in a prime location. A private sanctuary in the nestled in corner of our expansive garden, it feels secluded and remote, yet lies only a 1km walk from the heart of Castlemaine. At Butterworth Cottage the morning sun filters through leafy branches, casting playful patterns on the floor. The native garden is alive with the warble of magpies, the chirp of blue wrens and the call of frogs. Listen quietly and you might spot an echidna or sugar glider passing by. Here, in our hidden oasis you can unwind, immerse yourself in the bush surroundings, and to find your own peaceful hideaway. As guests at Butterworth Cottage you can soak in the bath, warm your spirit by the fire during winter evenings and collect eggs from the chooks. During the summer days you can enjoy a refreshing dip in our saltwater lap pool with views of Mt Franklin (Lalgambuk). The pool is used by cottage guests and our family. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a family. Butterworth Cottage has a queen size bed in the main bedroom room, and two small kid size beds in the tiny ‘Snug’ room which is perfect for building cubby houses, or can fit a third adult at a pinch (one bed is standard size, the other is 1.56 m long, both are narrower than standard single beds.) We have a safety rail for the bunk bed and portacot available if required. Butterworth Cottage is located 850m from the Castlemaine Train Station, and 1.5 km from the Castlemaine Visitor information center.
We are Lisa and Steve, and in November 2024 we took over the lovely Butterworth property from Shirley. We are travellers, having embarked on countless long-distance bike rides and hikes around the globe. Now, we’re delighted to share our favourite corner of the world with you. Butterworth Cottage embodies the ideal refuge we seek when we crave a break from the tent on our travels - peaceful, clean and in walking distance to great food. While check-in is remote, if you'd like advice we'll be happy to help you out with suggestions about what to see and do, where to ride, play swim and eat around Castlemaine.
Castlemaine is a former gold mining town. It is renowned as a vibrant artist community and boasts great food, wine and beer options. It's a great place for outdoor fun with great riding, walking and swimming spots to explore. It's an easy day trip to Daylesford, Kyneton, Bendigo, Trentham and Maldon.
