Have been visiting South Shields for around 60yrs with my parents for holidays, we have been with our children on holidays, now retirement still finds us visiting. Perfect holiday on the beach, entertainment/ concerts in bents park, relaxing park next door, fairground opposite and 5 min walk to the shops. Metro to Newcastle. Loads of places to visit marsden rock, the grotto. Mini ferry to North Shields for some more shopping. Coleman’s best fish and chips.

There was everything for every age group to have a great time. Rain, no problem, there was plenty of inside fun to be had. The beach and promenade were lovely, we ran out of time before we had run out of things to do,

The perfect base for a visit to the North East.

The perfect base for a visit to the North East. It’s at the finish of The Great North run, Souter Lighthouse NTrust is the first run by electricity and is a few minutes from Marsden Grotto a hotel/pub carved out of the cliff and reached by a cliff side lift down to the hotel and sand/rocks beach. Dolphins and Orca have been spotted from here, we missed some by minutes. Having a history of smugglers there are several coves, there’s a long promenade as well as harbour walls and cliff top walks, a beautiful Marine Park with boats like giant swans and a steam railway circuit of the park. A fairground and Arcade, famous ice cream cafe, a railway carriage restaurant, and an equally famous fish & chip shop in the town on Ocean Road. Indoor swimming pool, Roman fort, lots to do in South Shields itself. Nearby we visited Washington Hall the ancestral home of President George Washington of the USA, The Angel of the North is in a small park, Beamish Open Air Museum was exciting with so much history to explore and trains and buses to help you get around. At Tynemouth Priory we recognised views and places where the series Vera had been filmed then drove a short way to St Mary’s Lighthouse and walked to it whilst the tide was out. The Spanish City on Whitley Bay’s lovely promenade is that mentioned in Dire Straits “Tunnel of Love” and has been a Vera location. It’s a short drive from South Shields to Sunderland where sadly the National Glass Centre is being closed in July 2025 (Pyrex started in Sunderland), we saw Moulin Rouge at the Empire Theatre which frequently has top class plays, musicals and events that go on to be London shows. There’s some great restaurants as well as lovely beaches, a fairground, promenade, museum and the church and history of St Bede is here by the River Wear. Durham Cathedral is well worth a visit and its riverside walk. Enjoy! We did!

Always a delight to come back and visit South Shields.

Always a delight to come back and visit South Shields. Plenty of beautiful historic places to visit. Bonus if the weather is good! Favourite places were Wallington NT and Kielder forest and water. Found a great wetherspoons in the town! Ocean Road is walkable from hotel. Plenty of white sandy beach nearby.
