FAQs about hotels in Shanghai

A Beacon of Modern China

A beacon of 21st-century China, Shanghai is modernizing at an electrifying rate. Nowhere is this more evident than the skyscraper-punctuated Pudong commercial district. The most distinct - the Oriental Pearl Tower - has a ball at the top and bottom and has fabulous city views. A number of towers also twist as they go up – a feat of contemporary engineering.

This side of the city also houses Shanghai Pudong International Airport, while Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is over the Huangpu River in the Puxi district. An area of older and less dominating buildings, Puxi features the elegant Bund area whose varied architecture includes a surprising array of Art Deco.

With a choice of shopping centers and small shops beneath brightly lit neon signs just like Chinatowns across the world, Shanghai shopping is fantastic.

Other must-see Shanghai attractions include the wonderful Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple. For a break from the hustle and bustle, head to the Yuyuan Gardens, the beach or peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town in the west.

Whether you choose one of the Shanghai hotels, apartments or hostels, take time to go to a tea house, a Chinese institution. Also worth sampling are Shanghai hairy crab, steamed dumplings and the freshwater fish so popular with locals.

Shanghai is a beautiful and fascinating city, but it is extremely crowded. Exploring the central areas in the evening can be quite difficult because of the huge crowds, and it is often hard to take good photos of the city’s beautiful sights without people getting in the way.

Great city to visit but I wouldn't stay here more than 3 nights as once you've done the most obvious touristic things there isn't much else to do. Food was great though. We didn't visit a single restaurant that didn't have above average food!

I would love to come again! Absolutely loved it!

I would love to come again! Absolutely loved it! Found cheesecake factory inside LV ship and food was great there. There was a greenhouse garden, probably better to go when there is some daylight left still but also the night time view is great. Very easy to go around places! Bund and oriental pearl tower were the busiest places of all but view was amazing. Light show from bund and sunset and view from oriental Pearl tower is worth going for. City Gold temple is definitely worth going to in the evening. It is so pretty and lots of shops there

A great city with lots to see and do, including museums, architecture, experiences, and food. You just need to be ready for the culture clash; very few people speak English, and everything is handled via local apps, so you'll need AliPay (payments), Didi (taxis) and AMaps (maps). Meituan (food) is also useful, though it is embedded within AliPay. There's also little concern for personal space, which takes a little getting used to. The metro is fantastic for getting around - clean, air-conditioned and cheap. I was there in July, and I'd avoid that month as it's really hot and humid.

Shanghai is the largest and most modern city in China but at the same time we found it a bit less authentic then other cities we have visited such as Beijing, Xian and Chengdu. It is also quite more expensive. With that said it is still very much worth visiting for a few days with lots of things to see.

The view from the room was amazing and the room itself was spacious and extremely clean. Breakfast was delicious and had options for everyone, whether they liked oriental or western food. The staff came in to check everything and change towels every day; they were very nice. When we needed help or had questions about anything both staff and reception did their best to help out. All in all, 10/10 would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Shanghai.

The location was amazing, so many interesting shops and cafes nearby. Perfect for exploring the French Concession, and many of Shanghai's other highlights were just a quick (rental) bike ride away. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The washing machine was very useful. Generally it felt more like staying in your friend's place than like a hotel. The atmosphere was homely rather than extravagant.

Rooms are clean and nicely decorated, all facilities needed, nice balcony on top of the building. The host was amazing and very friendly, helped us with arranging transport to the airport. The location is amazing, definitely one of the best areas to stay in Shanghai, right in the French concession with lots of cafes and restaurants around

Location was great for a quick overnight near the airport, especially the fact we could walk to the hotel. Bed was comfortable and the bonus "firm" and "soft" pillows was a welcome surprise. Breakfast was more than adequate. If ever in Shanghai again for an overnight, would definitely stay again.

fantastic location, right at the heart of the former French Concession, within the walking distance to many points of interests. The best hotel breakfast I ever had! Lots of choice of Chinese food, including made-to-order wanton soup! Very comfortable beds. Cheap taxi transfer to the airport.
