Hawkshead Cottage
Hawkshead Cottage is part of a complex of four back-to-back cottage dwellings in Old Glossop built of gritstone from a nearby hillside quarry with overhanging stone roof eaves. It is thought that the cottages were originally commissioned by a local mill owner in the early nineteenth century following a visit to Switzerland. The Mill itself was largely demolished at the end of the twentieth century but nearby out-buildings remain which now house small businesses including a carpentry workshop and the "Howard Town Brewery" which uses modern, state of the art, equipment to brew fine award-winning contemporary ales and lagers named after local landmarks. The Brewery Tap Room is open at weekends and hosts a lively local folk club on Sunday afternoons. With deep solid stone walls, the cottage is warm and cosy in the winter, cool and airy in the summer. There is a small quiet secluded private garden with flowers and shrubs and a seated terrace patio overlooking fields where horses are stabled. There are glorious views towards Bleaklow, Blackshaw Clough, Shire Hill woods with the Snake Pass beyond, and in the distance the ever-changing hues of the high moorland hills of Kinder.
Alan and Carole will welcome you to Hawkshead Cottage and are available by telephone to answer any questions during your stay. Hawkshead Cottage has been completely renovated in 2020. The Bedroom contains a solid oak wardrobe and dressing table with two chairs, bedside tables and a hand-crafted solid oak bed made especially for Hawkshead Cottage by master craftsmen at a carpentry workshop in the Derbyshire Dales. The medium-firm mattress was manufactured in Leicester and the bed linen consists of cotton sheets with hotel quality hypo-allergenic silk duvet and pillows from Bakewell. The Living Room has a fold-down wooden table that seats four. The leather and fine fabric sofa, upholstered in a contemporary style by a long established Glossop furniture upholsterer, opens into a double sofa bed for third and fourth guests. Extra cotton towels and bed linen are supplied as standard. The Bathroom has cupboard space and drying rails for towels and wet-weather clothes. There is a washing machine, retractable washing line in the garden and a maiden for indoor drying, with a steam iron and ironing board The kitchen is fully equipped with utensils and cookware.
The 'Dark Peak' northern part of the Peak District National Park and Access to Open Country begins at the bottom of the lane with a number of public footpaths providing hiking routes across the surrounding countryside and onto the upper heather clad moors of Bleaklow. 'Doctor's Gate' and the Edale - Kinder Scout - Crowden section of the 'Pennine Way' national footpath are just an hour or two's ramble away. Horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, angling and mountain bike riding are all available at short distance. Old Glossop has three well supported local pubs welcoming visitors with fine local ales and food. The village has a tea room serving lovely home made cakes. Manor Park public gardens, tennis and children's play area a short walk from the cottage. Glossop is a lively former mill town with many interesting buildings and landmarks from the nineteenth and twentieth century. It has a regular daily train service to Manchester Piccadilly and bus services to Tameside to the west and Hayfield, Buxton and the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales to the south. There is a regular indoor and outdoor market and many independent shops and cafes selling local produce and refreshments
