Holmlea was built as a weaver’s cottage in the 1840s and was entirely renovated in 2023. I'm proud of how warm and calming the space now is. Our aim has been to provide a stylish, timeless 5* hotel environment in a small, self-contained cottage. One UK king bedroom plus a proper double sofabed downstairs. Just a minute’s walk from our bustling town centre, Holmlea offers a peaceful, cozy welcome to the magnificent southern uplands. Perfect for a romantic getaway, or just a restful stopover.
Hi there! I'm Sam, and I'm an artist. Holmlea was rescued in 2023, and extensively restored and refinished. I have lived in Moffat since 2021 and fell in love with the town and the stunning countryside of the southern uplands. Dont tell everybody, but we live in the most beautiful part of the UK. Amazing sandy beaches, culture-rich cities, and amazing historic locations are all within easy reach of the town. The rich history of Moffat and Annandale is terrific - we have, through time, been at the crossroads of change, with the Romans, Celts, Picts, Anglo Saxons, Gaels and the English all battering at the door. We are surrounded by hill forts and ancient garrisons, with the blood of our reiver and clan forebears soaked into our hillsides. Familiar names like Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott have walked our wynds and supped in our coaching inns. We are thrilled to live in such an evocative landscape - who wouldn’t. We’re thrilled to now be able to share some of this with visitors.
Moffat is a quiet market town with great eateries and pubs, parks and boutiques, plus a couple of theatres. There’s nearby hiking and kayaking. The walking routes are limitless! Dumfries & Galloway is truly stunning! We have fabulous beaches like Powillimount and Southerness, wonderful cove villages like Kippford, all within an hour’s drive. We have country houses like Drumlanrig Castle and, over to the east, Bowhill, plus cultural gems such as Abbotsford ‘The Home of Sir Walter Scott’ and The Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries. We’re the gate Our county town, Dumfries, is just over a half hour drive away to the south-west, though there are regular buses available from our market square every couple of hours in the morning (check the timetable at the bus stop). The ancient market town of Lockerbie is a 20 minute drive to the south on the M74, with its Memorial Gardens. Lockerbie has our closest main line railway station running trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Carlisle, Birmingham and further south. London is a 3.5 hour journey by train. The Scottish Southern Uplands Way skirts the town and has drawn visitors since the Victorian era.
