The attractive Wensleydale town of Middleham is renowned for its history and race horses. Much of the history is bound up with its Norman Castle home to Richard III. It dates back to 1190 and has a castle keep second in size only to the Tower of London. Middleham is renowned for its Racehorses. There are a huge number of stables and the horses are a great sight walking through the market square to the gallops every morning. The pretty market square is partially cobble and offers a range of shops, a very good fish and chip shop, and 4 pubs, 3 of which offer food. The bustling market town of Leyburn is just a short drive away offering a variety of shops and pubs as well as a very good indian restaurant and a couple of fine dining restaurants including The Sandpiper. Just a short drive away is The Forbidden Corner (booking recommended). It is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and surprises set amidst 4 acres of grounds, providing a fund day for all the family. All in all this is a superb base for exploring Wensleydale and all within easy driving distance of Richmond with its castle; Masham famous for its breweries; Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese.
