Constructed from traditional honey-coloured Cotswold stone, dating back at least 150 years, the cottage originally started life as a barn. Why Stow-on-the-Wold? It is a delightful Cotswold town which, along with Moreton in Marsh, is perhaps the best known of the small Cotswolds towns. This popular town stands exposed on a 700-foot high hill at a junction of seven major roads, including the Roman Fosse Way, perhaps a reason why it was the site of the last battle of the English Civil War in 1646. At the height of the Cotswold wool industry the town was famous for its huge annual fairs where as many as 20,000 sheep were sold at one time. If you look closely when you visit The Square, you will see narrow alleyways between some of the buildings; these are known as ‘chures’ and were designed to channel the sheep into The Square on market day. The vast market square testifies to the town’s former importance. At one end stands the ancient cross, and at the other the town stocks, shaded between an old elm tree. Around the square is an elegant array of beautiful Cotswold town houses. Opposite Teagles Cottage is The Porch House Hotel, which is reputed to be the oldest Inn in England, dating back to 947 AD. Stow has a sophisticated collection of shops and restaurants and is the perfect starting point for walks.
